Anyone have any recommendations on camera repair around Phoenix? My XTi has decided to fail on me one week before my Yellowstone trip. It won't power on anymore and I can hear something rattling inside. :(

In some cases the repair of an Xti can take longer and cost more than just purchasing a new body from CostCo.

Nice shots Michael.. the second set her eyes look a little over-cooked in the close-up shot.. maybe tone it down a little bit? ps..... glad you decided to take a shower...
Nice shots from Flag Doug... it was a LOT cooler up there.... we took a little camping trip on Saturday/Sunday to escape the heat for a bit.

There is good and bad to being up there when it's busy. Good if you like all the people and non-riding related activities. Bad if you just want to enjoy the roads in the area. There's too many people to actually enjoy the rides. Save that for when there is nobody around.
I haven't been up there since 1987. Is it still a trailer fest with all the yuppies?

well, I watch radar (www.wunderground.com) Composite 124nm with Storms and Lightning detection options activated. A strong thunderstorm have a head over 25,000'. That Haboob last week was due to the collapse of a BIG thunderhead. Anyway, I watch to see where the cells are developing and which way they are headed.. that determines where I might go for an interesting backdrop (San Tan Mntn, Superstitions, etc)
when I get to location, set up the tripod and watch the lightshow... often strikes will be generated from the same localized cell. I use Liveview to focus in the distance (use the zoom funtion) - the Inifinity mark most often is not the perfect focus point, I've found on most of our L lenses that perfect long distance focus is about 1/8" to the left of the mark
do a couple of test shots to nail the light - if its dusk with some ambient you will need to lower the ISO to get a longer shutter speed, I start at F8 (in the dark of the night) and adjust depending on focal length and strike distance (remember the Inverse Square Law?)
in the city you will also get yellow contamination due to mercury vapor streelights, so I switch to Tungsten WB (and /or shoot RAW so that you can easily change it at will in post).
I typically shoot repeated 30-sec exposures (so have charges batteries).
If I'm really lazy I'll program the intervalometer to run the sequences for me, and I can then run longer shutter (bulb)
some buddies have built their own lightning detector triggers (arduino circuits) which 'see' the feeler strike and the trip the shutter beforee the 'main' strike. That saves on shutter activations and also is an immense help in capturing daytime lightning strikes.

What are my favortie things to photograph? Wow, that's a hard question for me. I don't get to shoot as often as I'd like and if you looked at my flickr page you'd see I'm all over the place as far as subjects. People, animals, vehicles, interesting places, urban exploring, DISNEYLAND! (although I can't afford to go there much). So far I've enjoyed all of it and I hope it stays that way.

I'm in Goodyear AZ and wanted to offer up 3- aftermarket t2i camera batteries, charger and a glass LCD protector to anyone local that can use them. All the batteries work great.
I had a t2i as my first DSLR and the rubber grip started to peel from the body. I had Best Buy send it in for repair and Canon authorized a replacement. I have no idea why, but I didn't argue and got a 60D. So I just thought I'd offer these to the forum and local for free, unless of course you insist on paying. Ha ha...

Hey Scott! I've been fine. Of course I remember you, still so very grateful for your help and advice. Next week will be intense, I'm flying to DC for my Brothers wedding and taking pics for him. No pressure there, right? Ha ha! I've never been there so I'm really looking forward to it.
Good luck. Share the shots upon your return.

As far as the lightening shot goes. It's amazing either way. I have a hard time deciding about the city lights. If you go so far as to remove them all, what about the power lines at the bottom? I really don't feel the lights have any affect on the power of the image at all.

I have a question for you guys? What is the best place to rent lenses locally? I need to try and get 17-35mm and a 70-200 or something similar for tomorrow. I've been looking at Tempe Camera, but I have no experience with them.
AZAlphaDog
28th of July 2011 (Thu), 14:52
With the demise of Photomark, I'm guessing Tempe Camera is your only option. I have rented a few different lenses from Tempe Camera and they are a reasonably priced option.
You could try borrowing something from friends, or borrowlens.com which is great but takes more time, or go to best buy and purchase the lens and just take it back when you are done.

I ended up putting a few on reserve at Tempe Camera, it should be fine.

Nice model shots Steve and Michael... :) Sundevil your lightning stuff is always a treat to look at. How do you find the time to storm chase all night long anyway? lol..
Scorpions.... ick! And a mama full of babies on her back.. scary! Thomas Canty, I'm going to steer clear of that section of the desert from now on.. now way I want to have any close encounters with those guys...
I was watching a rattlesnake show on the Animal channel last night. Insane... guys in Texas hunting for them and getting paid by the pound for live snakes..... Just doesn't seem worth the effort at a measly $4.00 per pound of snake.... risk vs. pay just doesn't equate in my book. lol. ;)
Hope everyone is doing well. :)

LOL - My wife is a saint! ;)
I don't go that often, usually quick trips around town. This one a just a bit farther, had never ventured that way, was gonna make the loop Superior > Kearny > Oracle Junction >Queen Creek but the storms fizzled so I just headed back in time to help put the kiddoes down...:D

I don't know ,,,, I went to Tempe camera today to buy a 50mm 1.4 but I just can't bring myself to paying $100.00 more with tax than online.. I can see 10,20, or even 30 more to support the local guy as I usually do, but I just don't have money to burn for nothing.
Even the 430exii was almost a 100 more than everyone else.. it's a shame really.. to bad the OE's don't give a competitive discount to the brink and morters... If the items were priced within 20 or so dollars of online, I probably would have purchased both..

Only been to Tempe Camera and Photomark once. Saw the prices and ran out.

I bought my 7D at Photomark for not much more than online. I figured it would be nice to have local support if I needed it ...

About a year ago a high-school buddy connected with me on Facebook. We were both Yearbook photographers, needless to say he went on to bigger and better and is now doing design work for HTC. We bantered back and forth as he traveled the world, taking lotsa cool shots in far-away places, and I ... didn't. Several months ago he emailed me about shooting 3D pictures using the "super secret" Beta EVO-3D. I shot with the phone around Phoenix, Mesa Art Center, Desert Botanical, etc and even took a road trip to Sedona. Six of my images were selected, among others, as the example shots to ship in the phones. I found this review of the phone recently and they show three of my shots, one as the 'cover' frame, and several others in sequence at 1:45 of the clip. The clip image above was shot at the Mesa Arts Center.
<a href="http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/htc-evo-3d-sprint/4505-6452_7-34554507.html" rel="nofollow">reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/htc-evo-3d-sprint/4505-6452_...</a>
and it was a paid gig, to boot!

Picked up the 50 1.4 here in Il @ Calumet. Their prices were the same as online and only additional was tax. Perhaps they have better buying power with multiple locations and an online presence to be be able to give better deals then Tempe Camera.
Heres a few test shots from today.
