Thats a cool dog haha
Mine would be scared of the snow...

Here is my fail for the month:
I was asked for my resume.... I dont have one and dont know what i am suppose to put in one... i have never had to fill one out before that i know of. Any help?

Also i was going to buy a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II but reminded myself to check and see if the ink is refillable and i know you can buy refill stuff from canon on amazon etc but if you go to Cosco you can get refills for i think its $20 or something like that.
My question is, would this printer be able to read the ink after refill? My HP printer was one of those printers that had a sensor in the ink or something like that were it could only have specific ink... I was hoping this printer wouldnt.

Does anyone know or know of a website that would tell if it is or is not compatable with refill ink?

My search results Here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/search.php?searchid=23950247). From searching on POTN.

I am guessing you mean a resume for your photography work (but your questions wasn't real clear)?
- A website hosting some of your work or bringing/showing a portfolio of your work and possible previous clients/referrals should satisfy most potential new clients.

Really nice captures Doug and Matrix311. Would love to have been at the game and the dog shots look like a blast to shoot.

Here is one from last nights session.... a very long.... very late session... with a very uncooperative baby.

Nice shot Frank, did you shoot her before the baby. She looks familiar.

The power of google and not used to often, was wondering when someone would do that lol.

Hey TD, I'll write you a resume for 400.00. Guaranteed someone will look at it.

this is why you need the 1dmkIV! set strobe to lowest setting, put on high fps, and seconds later you have at least 100 shots. just gotta pick which flailing of the arms looks best out of the whole lot :-P

I was asked a good question today.
"How do you prove that you are a photographer and not a perve before meeting the model/person?"
My answer was to give them contact information to referrals but i may be wrong?..
So how do you prove you are a photographer?

The average relative humidity ranges from over 90 percent in the morning to around 60 percent in the afternoon. The temperatures in the summer in Houston is very similar to average temperatures seen in tropical climates, such as in the Philippines and Central America.

We never get used to the humidity when we live in such a dry place... but it's always nice when your skin is moisturized... :) Enjoy the trip Jeremy. I'm sure you'll have a great time either way. :)

Went camping over the weekend... couple of shots from an afternoon hike, and a sunset hike... kinda fun to just play with the camera with no requirements. :)

Happy Tuesday!

Someday a macro lens will help me out with these kinds of shots, but for now the 24-70 still makes me smile.

Had 2 combine 2 exposures for this one... still haven't learned how to do HDR... but ah well... kinda pretty anyway. I liked how the cactus spines were glowing in orange tones.

Received this today...

My name is "blank" and I am looking to feature a boudoir photographer on our website BLANK BLANK is structured to feature your business for a 24 hour period on our website. There is upfront charge to feature your business on our site .....all you need to do is some sort of promotion.

We have approx. 150,000 savvy subscribers in the greater Phoenix area. This provides a no risk approach to new exposure for your business. Also, once your promotion has successfully run on the BLANK website, you'll receive a check from us within 15 business days, based on the number of individuals that pre-purchased your promotion.

Currently we are having a special "flirt fest" promotion for the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday and want to feature a Boudoir photo package. Let me know if you are interested as we only have a few days left to secure a photographer. Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Blank

--------------------------------------
I responded... asked what their cut was for the promotion... it's 50% of the sales... and she didn't mention the upfront fee. I said our packages start out at "X" and go up from there... I didn't think we would be able to come up with a package that would be attractive to the mass market. But... I was willing to listen to what they had in mind...

------------------------------------------------------------------------
The reply...
Thanks for your response. Maybe we can put together a special package just for our flirt fest.......but I do believe it has to be a boudoir type session/package. Once the deal is closed and the purchases have been made thru our site, our percentage is 50% of the sales. We do have a price point range for the package that they want to see...... a 1 hr photo shoot priced at $75 or a 2 hr priced at $100. Do you think u could have a boudoir photo package priced at that range?

---------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't replied back yet... but... at those rates... and I'm sure they will find someone to meet their needs.... how are we supposed to make more than $.05 an hour? 2 hour session for $100 which they get $50 of and I still have to pay taxes on the sale... so... what's left? Maybe I should offer this? $100 for a 2 hour session with a minimum print package purchase of $900? LOL they would never go for it... just a thought. I don't think $75-$100 is the market/clients we are looking for... maybe I am missing something? Maybe this could be a great opportunity? But... I'm fairly positive this is a losing situation/proposition.

HELL no.

You pay a "promotion fee", plus they get 50% of ALL sales, not just the session fee. That means your print packages as well. PPA's general guidance is pricing at 4x your cost. If you are doing this, then I'd be amazed if you can cover your costs alone, not counting your time, unless you are only offering 4x6 prints.

There is a reason they are "searching" for someone to offer this. I bet everyone they contact is running like scalded dogs.

Just a quick note abut my business, Racers Photo LLC. I mention it here because many of you have been as mentors to me and have never hesitated to help when I asked. I hope you don't mind me talking numbers, but I figured some might find it interesting.

I filed the paperwork and put the site up around March of 2010. I closed out the year with around $4,000 in gross revenue. With the exception of digital downloads, all of my products are fulfilled through Zenfolio's providers (who aren't cheap) and I have kept my markup very low. Local motorcycle club racers and trackday riders are a cheap bunch. Zenfolio does deliver the digital downloads and take their 8% cut, but I have no cost and little time involved.

I paid out close to $2,000 to other photographers (several who are regulars here) who helped me out by covering events that I wasn't able to get to. Their take for various events varied from zilch to several hundred dollars, depending on lots of factors, not the least of which was the amount of marketing performed before, during and after the events, and the speed at which I could get the photos uploaded to my site.

After product and operating costs and Zenfolio's take, net profit to me was pretty low, considering the amount of time I invested. Just enough to make me consider not throwing in the towel this year. :)

So, a modest beginning. I was frankly quite burned out at the end of the year, trying to keep up with long hours at my day job and lots of family responsibilities. That's why I haven't been here much.

I plan to keep moving forward, but I need to implement some lessons learned and figure out how to make the best use of my time.

Would happily entertain questions or comments, but if all I get are yawns of boredom, that would be understandable too.

I didn't bother to respond... I checked in to Doozy of a Deal several months back and they were the same way. I'm not going to drag out the studio... shoot for 2 hours.. process for four or more... to make $.50 in the end. I've been there.. done that... right Steve? Kristy? LOL

Dean have you thought about putting together individual shoots/packages for the riders? You go out... shoot them riding.. standing/posing by the bikes (little studio lighting)...put together a print package? Your work is topnotch and you the track photographer right? Maybe approach the riders with a flyers.. run a special... shoot them at the track ... and only them for "X" amount to include a session in the pits? I mention this because at the bodybuilding events... there was a shooter there who people hired to have him specifically shoot them on stage and after. You could easily handle 3-4 people a day there if not more without having to cover shooting everyone and then placing the images online with the hopes they will buy. We learned with the bodybuilding stuff... it's the impulse buy that makes the money. So.. if you offer them a special...only valid for the day of the races?

Just some thoughts...

Yeah. If you think about it, you would be putting 50% of your gross into marketing. No business puts half their gross revenue into marketing.

I noticed you have galleries up from 2009, I would take down old galleries. There's not much incentive to buy the images (print or download) if the image is always available in your gallery.

Dean, paraphrasing Adam Carolla....."Do it because you love it. You should expect to work for free, or next to nothing for a while. Somewhere down the road, if you work is good stuff (which yours is), you will get noticed. People will eventually ask you to do a job for them. You will start getting quality paid gigs."

He started a podcast a couple of years ago after getting booted off terrestrial radio. He was paying about $10,000 a month in costs to produce the podcast. He eventually picked up sponsors and is now turning a profit, after about a year and a half. All you need to do is invest in yourself.

The bottom line is that you have to stay with it. When I am actually working my day job, I'm being billed out at close to $100 an hour. When I'm taking pics, I'm doing it for free, knowing that my ten year plan is slowly coming together. I accept that and am happy to have the experiences which I have had. In about another six or so years, I plan on being at a point in my photography where I can take it very seriously, and maybe, dump the corporate gig and shoot full time.

We'll see how that works out. But, it's a plan with a goal, and a goal is the most important thing. Hopefully I will reach that goal.

The issue is i have always been doings something more like creating from scratch or editing photos with un-real edits not glamor edits or skin softening stuff like that.
It wouldnt turn out so well if i did unless they wanted to learn editing like to take out a person or a building etc as can make anything out of scratch just takes loads of time.

I'm running Aperture 3.0 on my Mac, and it's fine. My way of thinking, is that the shot should be great to start with and need minimal PP. Based on that way of thinking, it should not matter which photo editing software I use, since I hopefully would only use minimal adjustments to get the pic where I want it.

Pixel painting. Very hard to get good at but fun to do if you have enough time. I can never do that in an hour or two like most people i have seen. Takes me more like 8 hours or even a day depending on what i make.
I think he should of worked on skin textures though. Near the end. But i dont know what he/she was using so i guess maybe they couldnt or just didnt want to.

Just a slight tip to anyone who wants to learn it etc on their own, you can learn by either having a picture next to it cropped in a spot or even better have a picture with a low opacity so its barely visable but also a layer above it thats invisible until you need to see it again. (How i learned sadly.)

I normally use lightroom to upload my pictures to anywhere. I can do it through flickrs uploader but i shouldnt have too as lightroom is suppose to do it as well. My computer has slowly been dieing on me because im too lazy to fix it just like the rest of my stuff. More busy fixing others that i dont do my own. Eventually ill get to it but like i cant upload from lightroom, i cant use photoshop or any photo editting lol. Have tons of viruses from god knows what my cuzin used my laptop for when i was on vacation, and none of my usb ports work haha.

Edit: Fixed it all now. :)

we had three Canon users all piggybacking on the same strobes, shooting for about three hours, NO battery changes!

They kept saying something about the abundance of 'specular highlights', don't know what they were referring to! (<-- note resemblance)

That's the beauty (besides me) of High Speed Sync.. an option avaialble on Canon EX lights. The units 'pulse' light in sync with the curtains as they pass over the sensor, there's a give and take in terms of light output (~2.5 stops) and battery 'life', but the added flexibility of being able to cancel sunllight completely will provide some interesting options

Syl did a great job deciphering Canon Flash. It covers the basics of exposure and lighting and then delves deeply into Canon flash controls, etc etc

I had suggested a while ago we have a low-pressure free-form off-camera flash meetup, and I even went so far as to post up ideas and suggested details . . .

didn't seem to go much farther than that . . .

:) One day... would like to put a class together... but.. in a way where it is beneficial to others. Sounds nutty... lol... but.. most of the seminars/workshops I've attended haven't been great.

I agree Doug... we got close... but... no cigar. :( It's really nice out now... do we try again?

I got some reasonable information from the Kelby/Joe McNally seminar they had last month, but the other guys said they didn't get much out of it . . .

I would rather get some simple info. and try to apply that information at that time, I think that is better than watching someone else shoot with gear I don't have all day . . . but maybe that is just me.

I would like to learn concepts I can apply with the gear I have . . . I can do it on my own with a lot of trial and error (lots and lots of error) and I think it would be fun to work with a group in a more "explain concept, show me and watch me apply the concept" type of setting.

No pressure, just hanging out and learning.

Here is a typical conversation between us. Dumb ideas and all...

(R) Hatch... how would you light this scene and what would you use? Or, how would you fix this in Photoshop... or... how do you like this image...
(H) do it this way...X,Y,Z...fix this... blah blah blah....
(R) Nah... not going to do it that way... that's dumb
(H) cool... have fun
(R) A week later... hey man.. I think you were right.. I should have listened to you.
(H) Your new name is "Circles" because this is the 20th time I've pointed you in the right direction and you always go off in your own direction but"Circle" back to what I originally suggested.

We've had that same conversation for the past 3 months... maybe longer. I'm use to it by now... :)

Dumb suggestions or not... ;)

Love the hummingbird shots, but I still feel I need to comment.

Buy some flowers at any local grocery store. Spray them with the sugar water used in the feeders. The little guys will love it, and you will not have feeders in the pics, but instead, flowers.

Nice hummingbird shots Eric! If you use the hue/saturation tool in Photoshop, you can select that magenta fringe on the white pieces and desaturate them. OR you can shoot Nikon and have CA removed in camera. :P
