Here's a couple of quick snaps of my grandson, Christian. He's such a photogenic little guy, one can hardly take a bad picture, which is fortunate for me. :) Wish I was as good with people as I am with bikes.
Just available light and my handy Nikkor 35 1.8.
He is so adorable.. I can't believe how much he has grown! Is he almost 2 years old already?

Cool still life shot.. I really like the first one the best. :)
Here are a few pictures of some newly discovered friends in my backyard. They have been here for a few weeks now. Finally had some nice opportunities to get some cool shots. Enjoy!
Nice hummingbird shots... fun to get out and shoot something just because you want to, huh... :)

Stepping away from glamour for a bit.
I'd like to get some nice shots of the phoenix skyline for my skyline collection. Do you guys know of any good spots where I could get a sweet shot of the skyline?
My longest lens is a 70-200 so it's gotta be decently close.
Thanks

McDowell Rd as it passes Papago Park would be great just after sunrise or before sunset, I would think.
I took this one from the I-17S to I-10E ramp one morning.

I literally just pulled over to the side of the ramp up against the wall and whipped out my camera and shot that through the windshield.
I tried shooting my buddy and his band at a pub the other night. VERY dark and challenging to get decent pics. Mostly my inexperience, I suppose. Anyhow, I came away with a few that I like. I am processing these from RAW in ACR and using the noise reduction built-in to that app as I shot at ISO 1600 and my old POS camera doesn't shoot as clean at that sensitivity as these new whiz-bang full frame models do. :D
Any recommendations of an affordable noise reduction step in my workflow that would yield better results?
Both of these are with my 35 @ f/1.8, 1/30, ISO 1600.

The only advice I have is not to take a shot when the golfer is in the process of the swing at any point. Save it for when the follow-through is done and the club is at a standstill. Otherwise, you may get harassed by one of the caddies. The shutter noise angers many in the game.

You would think if you are worthy enough to be on the tour, that you would be able to either tune that out or appreciate the fact that someone is actually shooting you. Ah well!

No. In the past, Tiger Wood's has given the nod to his caddy to take care of photographers who interrupt his concentration. One time, the caddy literally kicked a photographer's camera.
I can't recall the caddy's name, but he has a reputation of being a real *******.

AH! Here we go.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Williams_(caddy)
"Williams has been known to aggressively defend Woods on the course from overbearing fans. At one event, he wrestled a $7,000 camera from a fan who clicked a picture of Woods during his backswing and threw it in a pond"
Be careful out there.

lol I know. I had no clue the sensor was that dirty until I shot that video. Trust me it's already been cleaned. I like how the photography forum was the first to respond about the damn sensor vs the motorcycle/car forums I posted these on as well. They care more about the vehicle vs the quality of pics hehe.
Oh and make sure you do a visual run for any reservation cops. I've never seen any on that road and i've been out there countless times doing 100mph+ datalogs of my car for tuning purposes. But it's always good to do an inspection before anyways. Granted there are never any cars on that road period, its pretty wide open. Only thing you gotta worry about is hitting a stupid bird flying across the road. Since there are a lot of fields out there, there are a ton of black birds.

What kind of bike? I've got a pretty modded Yamaha Warrior which is also custom dyno tuned from East Side Performance in Mesa. It hauls pretty good ass from when I first bought it.
Whats the gretten 2 turbo? I've never heard of that before. Has he got any dyno numbers from it? I'm looking to go big turbo in my car sometime this year.
As far as the suspension I've got koni sports with h&r springs on there.

they hit from the teebox, club use depends on the distance to hole and each club has a different angle to them to differentiate height/distance. sand traps could be fun photos of the players as long as they're near the green. great game of consistency. btw, what do you want to know about the game?

What kind of bike? I've got a pretty modded Yamaha Warrior which is also custom dyno tuned from East Side Performance in Mesa. It hauls pretty good ass from when I first bought it.
Whats the gretten 2 turbo? I've never heard of that before. Has he got any dyno numbers from it? I'm looking to go big turbo in my car sometime this year.
As far as the suspension I've got koni sports with h&r springs on there.
I dont know what bike i have to tell you the truth. Im sure scott could tell you as he has seen it and i believe knows what it is.
Since its from my grandfather, my uncle wants to get it from me since its more of a father son thing which i understand. If we ever find the papers for it so i can put it in his name instead of mine, it wont be mine but eventually he said he would buy me a sports bike of my choice to trade. I am looking into the Daytonas. I dont want alot of power, just enough to get me to the speed limit ;D and not under it. haha. jk jk but really i do want a daytona just not sure which. Im not a bike person so im not looking for anything crazy. I have alot of time to search though. I still have to pay off a car i havent even recieved yet (Acura NSX) before i buy a bike.
Good suspension. I have kyb struts with ksport springs on my prelude. Waiting to get my free pair of ksport struts as well soon haha. Whenever i start working. :/
Been a hit and miss with work. Im in but havent started lol if that makes any sence.
PS: Are we doing a meet sometime? My camera hasnt been out of my bag for over a week :(

We need to revisit this. More pics, serial number, if you're interested in the history of the bike, etc.
Also, I'd be glad to assist in getting the bike in proper shape, should you decide you want to go down that path. I think that bike has potential to be a nice, original example of an older Sportster.

Guys,
Can any of you help me build a dedicated VMware EXSi server? I've been running VMware off my computer, but I've recently decided to go after the CCIE Voice certification. As such, I'm gonna need something much more powerful. I basically need a machine with 1.5+ TB HD space, 12+ gig ram, and i5/i7 core processer. I know exsi is very particular are the hardware it runs on.
Thanks in advance.

Wickenburg Gold Rush Days.
The new 5D seems to be over exposing shots, compared to my 7D. I adjusted it with some settings in the camera, but still, I'm surprised it's shooting so hot.
Anyway, here's a few pics. Some from the 5D, some from the 7D. It really doesn't matter. Both take great pics. Now, if only the photographer would improve.

Anyone going out to the Ren Fair and trying to get anything fun? Me and my fam are thinking of going out there on the 27th.
I'm currently in the "Tax-return-cometh-and-I'm-suffering-from-paralysis-by-over-analysis" syndrome. I want a new lens or 2, but not sure what I want. My sigma 70-200/2.8 turned in to a 200/2.8 prime a while ago (broken zoom) and I'm debating on replacing it with a Canon 70-200/2.8 non-IS, a new Siggy 70-200/2.8 or something else entirely. I have the 55-250 IS, so I have the range covered, but I did like the 2.8
I'm really being eaten up by the Siggy 8-16mm and Canon 10-22 UWA as an option. The Siggy is $699 and a refurbed Canon is $687. Aargh. I can probably pry about $1500 from the return for new glass.
I rented a 10-22 for a job I had photographing a hotel and it was nice, but I still ran in to areas where I could have used a wider angle still. Here are a couple of panos I did using the 10-22. The front desk was for fun and is actually straight all the way across. You can really bend stuff with the UWA. The colors of the place were horrible, very neutral and mixed flourescent and incadecent, sometimes in the same light fixture. :sigh:

Looks like a Tucson photographer is being targeted by the media. It looks like a seriously slanted article to retaliate against a photographer who saw his images being used in the media without his permission. A good lesson for us photographers if you find yourself in a position of copyright infrigement with media companies...they have the bully pulpit to make everyone hate you.

Photographer seeks fees for image of girl
by Jaimee Rose - Feb. 17, 2011 05:07 PM
The Arizona Republic
.
A Tucson portrait photographer whose image of 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green was shared with media outlets by her family after she was killed is seeking compensation from numerous media companies, including The Arizona Republic, and has threatened to sue if he is not paid.
Photographer Jon Wolf owns the photo's copyright and told the Green family that he intended to donate a portion of his earnings to a charity that helps grieving children and their families. However, Tucson charity Tu Nidito has since declined any funds he might receive. The Greens say they are infuriated by Wolf's actions. A public Facebook movement to boycott Wolf's business is circulating.
Gannett Co., Inc., parent corporation of The Arizona Republic and more than 140 other media entities including 12 News and USA Today, "respects intellectual property" and is willing to pay a standard licensing fee, said Barbara Wall, Gannett's vice president/senior counsel, but the sum will be far shy of the $125,000 Wolf has specified.
On the morning of Jan. 11, three days after the mass shooting at a Safeway near Tucson, Wolf's attorney, Edward Greenberg, contacted Wall, threatening to sue over copyright infringement and asking that use of the photo stop immediately. The Republic complied.
Wolf's request included a release form signed by both of Christina-Taylor's parents during the three-day period after their daughter's death, acknowledging Wolf as the copyright holder and freeing him to pursue damages.
A representative for John and Roxanna Green has said that, at the time, the Greens didn't fully comprehend Wolf's intentions.
"It's not right," John Green said. "People are angry at him, and they should be."
In a statement this week, the Green family said Wolf's intent to litigate "showed poor taste," particularly "in light of the fact that our family is still mourning and grieving the loss of our daughter."
The Greens said their "intent was not to allow others to profit from the Jon Wolf image but to allow the media to portray our daughter in the best light possible and to tell her story."
Wolf did not return a call seeking comment but on Monday offered an apology to the Green family and a statement to the media on his blog:
"My actions regarding this matter have been misunderstood and sadly mischaracterized. My intent from the beginning always has been to use the proceeds from my creative work to make a charitable donation in Christina Green's memory. I sought and received the Green family's approval to do so. At no time did I intend to profit personally from this tragedy."
Wolf wrote that he would "halt filing legal action in the hopes of reaching negotiated settlements" and will donate the proceeds he has already collected to a charity in honor of the little girl.
"I truly and deeply regret the additional distress this matter has placed on the Green family, and I apologize for that," he wrote.
Wolf's lawyer Greenberg declined an interview request.
Shortly after the shooting, Wolf contacted children's charity Tu Nidito and said he was expecting royalties from the photograph and planned to donate a portion, said Liz McCusker, executive director. However, Wolf did not mention that he planned to sue, and when McCusker found out, she called him to decline his offer.
She told him "we want to ensure that the Green family and all families that we work with are allowed to grieve in private and not be associated with that kind of action," McCusker said.
On Facebook, a public "Boycott Jon Wolf Photography for suing over Christina Green's photo" page had 827 members as of Thursday evening.
The Republic obtained the image on the afternoon of Jan. 8, when a reporter interviewing Christina-Taylor's uncle asked for a photograph of the girl.
The family offered a "picture taken down from the wall that was in a frame," said Tracy Collins, The Republic's director of visuals.
A Republic photographer took photos of the family member holding the photograph, and then "we took a picture of the picture so that we had a close-up of her that we might be able to use," Collins said.
Wolf's attorney told Wall that The Republic photographer should have removed the photo from the frame in order to check the back for a copyright mark and alleged that failure to do so was inappropriate conduct.
But to a grieving family, handling "a picture of a loved one in that way, at best, would be viewed as having no common courtesy to the family," Collins said, and perceived "as very negative behavior to them after they had volunteered to give that picture to us."
Wall said that "our photographer acted appropriately, and at the same time, we respect intellectual property.
"We'd be willing to pay a modest license fee for the use," she said, "and we're still willing to do that."

Bingo! It's not about the rights he had, but the approach and ambulance-chasing tactics he appeared to have used. He made his money off the shoot, and the family simply used a cropped portion of the picture as a representation of the little girl. He went to them to get a release so he could profit from this tragic event. They didn't use it to endorse a product or anything like that, so he should step back and chill.
What's next, demanding royalties for missing kids photos on milk cartons? Come on! There is a tima and place to press issues of copyright, and he could have even asked for a photo credit, but going for cash is stupid.

The whole article is written INTENTIONALLY to make him look bad. The Republic itself is one of those papers who ran the image without permission. They even acknowledge that they shouldn't have run the copywrited image without his permisison.
He went to the family 3 days later, because it was then that the girl's picture was being run. He didn't go there to get a release, as he already had the copyright. He met with the family to let them know that if any other news organization wanted to use his image that they were to arrange with him for rights usage, and that any proceedes he earned would be sent to charity.
The part he screwed up with, is by hiring a lawyer. The standard lawyer tactic is to "cease and decist" or we are gonna sue mentality. I think the lawyer saw $$, not the photographer.

Gonna have to sort of disagree with that...
His attorney confirmed he went there for a release on the 10th:
http://www.kgun9.com/Global/story.asp?S=14017124
"Greenberg confirmed that on the same day, Wolf approached the Green family about signing a release giving him official permission to license image rights to the media.
KGUN9 News pressed Greenberg on that point.
Waldman: "According to you the release was signed on the 10th. That's two days after the tragedy. What do you say to the people who may be upset with Mr. Wolf that he approached the Greens about this in the middle of one of the worst tragedies in this country and the worst in Tucson's history?""

He owns the copyright. He doesn't need them to sign a release. Their agreement was that any additional request for her image would be referred to the photographer.
If you want both sides of the story, you can't just look at the KGUN report. They are the defendent in this case. There is a reason courts don't let defendents argue the plaintiff's case for them.
In the case of Garnett media, they admitted wrongdoing. They acknowledged that they needed Wolf's permission to run the image. Their case, though, was that they felt it would be "insensitive" to the family to ask who took the picture so they could go get a release. That's BS. They knew they would have to pay for the use of the image, and do to the magnitude of this event this wouldn't be "normal" usage fees, so they took a gamble and got caught. Rather than pay up, they crucify the photog.

So If I take a photograph of someone, I own the copyright and I can just use it however I want? Awesome! I can go destroy all of those model releases I've had to obtain over the years!
Owning copyright does not give you the right to use the persons likeness in any way you choose. I have quite a few candid shot of folks that I could not use in a lot of different situations as I don't have a release. I could however use them in an editorial context (ie. a newpaper story). His own attorney admited he went back for a release.

I have read more than just the KGUN 9 report. The lawer stated he went back for a release, the charity he was going to donate to has stated that he called them to say a *portion* of the proceeds would be donated to them.
There was a story on KVOA and Azstarnet discussing the same stuff some quotes from the KVOA story at http://www.kvoa.com/news/jon-wolf-to-halt-filing-legal-action-over-green-photo/?sms_ss=facebook&at_xt=4d5a956bacb93199%2C0
Form the family:
"Jon Wolf, as we have painfully learned, showed poor taste in his choice to litigate over the usage of his photograph of our little girl Christina-Taylor Green. Our intent was not to allow others to profit from the Jon Wolf image but to allow the media to portray our daughter in the best light possible and to tell her story. It is unfortunate that he has chosen to litigate over the use of his photograph at this time, or at all, in light of the fact that our family is still mourning and grieving the loss of our daughter."
From the charity:
"We have asked, on behalf of the Green Family, that Jon Wolf Photography take off the link to the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona and the Cristina-Taylor Green Memorial Fund from its website. We will not accept any gifts for the Memorial Fund at this time from Jon Wolf."
Legal questions aside, the guy is a scumbag for going after money and trying to profit from this the same way ambulance chasing attorneys are scumbags. I have no issue with him demanding credit for the picture, but he made himself in to quite the tool and will pay for it in the way this affected his reputation.

Very disengineous, Erich. I never said that he could use it "however he wants". There is obviously a difference between a copyright release and a model release. For the image to be used in the media, they must obtain approval from the copyright holder. News media doesn't require a model release. If it did, wouldn't the media be just as despicable as the photographer, as they would have to get a model release from the family to report on her death. It sound like you are saying it would be okay for the media to push the family to sign a model release, but not the photog. If he wanted a model release, it would be to use it in a commercial fashion such as in advertising for his business. I'd be willing to wager if he has a decent contract, the model release requirements are already in there.
You are twisting the situation to fit your narrative. That is the same thing the media is doing.
My inital point in my response to you was that he screwed up by getting his lawyer involved. The family's statement backs that up by clearly stating that his choice to "litigate" is what they have a problem with.
As for him being a scumbag because he wanted money, why do you think the media wanted the picture? I hate to tell you this, but they are in business. They are in business to make money. The use of the picture is to get more people to read the story, over another newspaper's story that doesn't have that picture. The more people they get to read their material, the more they can charge their advertisers. There is nothing heartfelt, or otherwise self-less, about their actions. They want readers, so they can make money. Period. They made their money, and don't want to give it up to anyone.
Granted, he could have done it differently. I would have gone to the parents house with my depest condolences, a large, framed print, and a copywritght release so the parents could do whatever THEY wanted with the image. If the parents wanted the media to use it, that is their perogative. If the parents wanted to collect usage rights for the image, and use towards funeral costs, charities, or something else, I'd be very happy. Because the guy didn't make the same choice I would have, doesn't mean he was wrong.
Definately, the real scumbag is Jared Laughner. John Wolf is nowhere in the same class.

I could loan you mine, but logistics could get in the way.
Reasons.......
1) I'll be using it a week from Friday down in Tucson. I'll actually be there thursday and Friday.
2) I don't get into the Phoenix are much.
When would you be needing it?

Thanks again Scott. Your always helpful to the fullest. My friend let me borrow his. I needed it only for an hour or so to get a new camera. I sent in my 7D for some issues it had and they said that they will give me a new one since they were unable to fix it, i just had to bring in the box and everything that it had in it... lens was one of them. So i borrowed my friends scratched up one and in return i got a new camera, with a new lens which i gave back to him.
I really appreciate you always helping out. If you ever need anything i could help with, i would be more then glad to help out.
One question though. I had a kit lens but was stolen. Is there anything i could do about it? I didnt have it under my insurance at the time and when i tried to get insurance they said i would have to have it... I still have the warranty card but that doesn't give me much information. Google gives loop around and i was wondering if anyone else had the same experience but it come out good somehow...?

Day three:
Breakfast at the MGM Buffet, OK, but the service sucked, so my wife finagled it with the manager to get it comp'ed (since we're such high-rollers - LOL!).
Walked the WPPI trade-show floors, and perused the Print Competition, some good shots, nothing earth-shattering.

I love that hotel. Since the wife and I are not gamblers, and go to Vegas for the NHRA events and good food, the Trump is the perfect hotel for us.

Yes, great buffet, but I am not a big eater, so they really make their money off of chumps like me.

Is that the new place in City Center, or whatever they are calling it?
Looks like you had a very filling weekend.

we don't gamble or drink and since this is like the 4th time in a row we've been upgraded, we are WAY ahead of 'the house'. My wife joked that the only gambling she does is 'registration roulette' when deciding on which desk clerk will give her the deal at check-in.
and since we don't gamble or drink, the buffet is our vice where we 'cut loose' from the normal daily 'diet'
