That won't work.
What will work is if you had a baby attached to the camera. Then its like a cross to a vampire, and Frank won't come near it.

Very nice... love the backlight on her hair... (hatch...?)
Maybe turn down the skin smoothing on her tummy.. need a bit of texture, but then again fulll size file might show more detail..
Blacks seem a little heavy.... did you curves adjust them to be darker?

Not sure what else they could do to make the 5D3 better... other than built in grip... more cross type focus points... weather sealed...
I have no need for extra mega pixels.... hmmmm

Only issue I have had with the 5Dc and the 5D2 has been the AF tracking... moving objects.. it isn't the best for... but.. that being said... I think it's an amazing camera. Loved the 5Dc...really love the 5D2.
It's going to be interesting to see if Canon makes a 1DsMK4 or if they are going to beef up the 5D3 to be it's replacement or something similar. I'm sure Canon will make the 1Ds... but... it needs to be a significant leap ahead of the 5D2 or 5D3...
For now... I'd be happy to add a 1DMK3 to the mix or MK4....

Large: Lowepro Computrekker Plus AW
Medium: Lowepro Computrekker AW
Small: Lowepro Slingshot 300 (Pass on this style. IMO, just doesn't work as advertised and is NOT comfortable at all. Mine's now my Strobist bag only.)

Hey guys! I'm placing an order with B&H. I need recommendations for a backpack. What do you use?
I have a Fastpack 250 (LowPro) and loved it when I first got it, but grew out of it quickly.
I think the main thing I dislike about it is that I need to "keep" my 70-200 lens on the body at all times. If I switch say a 17-50, I have no place to really store the the 70-200 while not in use. That's only with 3 lenses total. While traveling, I keep the flash and PW's in the top compartment. It is nice having the computer pocket, but there are no tripod straps or holder either. I don't know what your requirements are, but if you have more than 3 lenses with a 70-200 I would not recommend the 250.
Hello Jason..!! :)

Hello, I normally just lurk here because I really have nothing to contribute, but I benefit greatly from all the knowledge on this thread. There are some great photographers here. I still have nothing to contribute, but I'm in desperate need of guidance!
I am strictly a hobbist photographer with no desire to be anything more. I do desire to be the best I can be though. I originally got a dslr to photograph my son's wrestling meets as my P&S wasn't cutting it.
Anyway, to get to the point, recently friends have been asking me to do pictures for them and although I've been using a dslr for 2 years and constantly read this forum, other informative photography sites and books, my portrait pictures are horrible. I know reading is different than doing but I still expected more. The photo I have attached was taken this afternoon. It has been edited somewhat, but as you can see it's still c#@p. The exif data is f6.3, 1/100, iso 400 using a 50mm 1.8 on a T2i.
My friends are not paying me and are not expecting perfection, but I would at least like to deliver a decent picture that I'm not embarrassed about. I upped my iso to get my shutter speed up and used 6.3 to get good DOF, but the picture is mealy and not crisp at all. What am I doing wrong? Thank you for any help you can give me.
P.S. I know the background is messy but this is where they wanted to do the picture.

Well i think for more people i would use a slightly higher dof (Though doesnt look bad at all). As for sharpness it might of been you holding it. If you had a tripod it might be sharper. Also maybe try in post process to up the "Clarity".
Just blank thoughts im throwing out.

Hi Cdahl :)
Welcome to the thread.
I think the image is pretty decent... maybe a little fill flash and you could drop the ambient exposure some for the background. F/6.3 for a single row is fine with the 50mm... odds are you were about 8-10 ft from them... so the DOF was about 3 ft.. more than enough to keep everyone in focus.
So... for a tip... maybe next time find some open shade or complete shade add a little fill flash to give them some pop. My eye goes to the bright background and then to the people.
Keep shooting and welcome to the thread.

Thank you for your replies.
@tauntdevil: I would have used a tripod, but they literally gave me 5 minutes to take these pictures.
@ Hatch: I have a flash, but I'm still getting used to using it and as I said above there was no time to play with flash compensation. I already feel self-conscious when I'm fiddling getting my settings set up.
If you don't mind me picking your brains, I have a couple of questions. I used center focus on the woman in purple face, if I had focused on her and then recomposed to get in closer and fill the frame (the above picture has been cropped), would I have lost more sharpness? I was afraid to try it with my limited time. I feel like I always need to use center focus since it's the most sensitive, is this true?
As I said earlier, I've read a lot, but applying it is a whole different story especially with people staring at you waiting for you to take their picture! Shooting a nice sunset in the desert all by myself is much less stressful!

Go to your happy place when photographing people :) Just objects for you to take photos of... ;)
Focus/recompose. Two camps out there from what I have seen. those who will not focus and recompose and the ones who do.
I do...
Yes... from my understanding the center focus point is the most sensitive.
Since the people are just about in a straight line...and the DOF is pretty deep for a 50mm at that distance... you should have a sharp image... maybe a slight falloff of sharpness at the edges depending on how the lens performs. Even when focusing and recomposing.
Just remember if you are in this situation again... you are the one in control... they will listen to you and you can tell them to relax for a minute as you are making some final adjustments to your settings.

Absolutely, if they asked that you do the shot - they should be more than willing to allow you some time to set up, take various shots, experiment with fill flash etc. The shot overall isn't bad. I think the fill flash really would help balance it out and if you could I would remove the taxi.

Many thanks Lisa. Kristy and I have a lot of fun working together.. we get lucky and capture a few nice shots on occasion. :)
Okay....
Here's the deal....
Shot this family of 11... had a "Brady Bunch" idea going on(no not original..but I hardly shoot large groups) so.. I had them point in different directions and make goofy faces to change things up. I can put standard portraits just like the Brady Bunch in there... but.. I thought this was fun... and somewhat funny.
Now.. I'm struggling to put something funny in the text block. They are a fun bunch... pun intended... and I think this might go over well. Jokes should not have to be explained to be funny...
Does it come across as funny or dumb... not going to hurt my feelings...
I look at the image and since it was Thanksgiving... they are all pointing at each other playing the blame game... and then there is G-ma in the corner raising her hand...
Thoughts?

I'm closer than most, being in Wickenburg, and I've been known to make a run to Kingman for some good BBQ at Redneck's on a whim. Maybe next time I'm heading up that way, I'll ping you in advance and drag along the camera gear. I've been itching to shoot along the old route 66 on the way to Oatman. I've never been out that way. Also, I want to run 66 from Kingman out to Peach Springs and Seligman some time.

Welcome Carrie too! :) Hang around a while, there's lots to learn around this place if you can devote the time to doing it.... Your image wasn't as bad as you think.. always room for improvement, but it comes with time and practice.. :)

Not sure what else they could do to make the 5D3 better... other than built in grip... more cross type focus points... weather sealed...
I have no need for extra mega pixels.... hmmmm

Hey Frank just got back from cali, Hawaii in March I think, the thread seems to be doing great.
How about a Laughlin shoot all?
Stayed there couple weeks ago, got a river view room at the Aquarius for $50.
We could do Oatman, the River, the Lake or Casinos and people?
We now have a new "guide" in that area!

We should have a holiday "meet N' greet" or one of those old fashion Michael O "meet and Greed" or should that be a "meat and greed?"
Some kind of meet up in Tempe for pizza or burgers or something and a little street shooting after, or at the festival of Lights parade downtown or something like that.

Cant post in the G/N section so ill post it here. Awesome shots Zen. I like all three shots.

SO, I took this photo of a little girl I babysit... a feat in itself as she cries everytime I try, she get's mad when I try to get her to sit still for a minute... So I never get a good shot of her.
Tried again today.. was using my "natural light studio".. lol.. not enough sunshine today to make it work properly, so I guess I need to drag out a strobe and soft box next time....
Anyway, every year I give the parents of the children I care for.. photos for Christmas presents....
I know the background on this is pretty hacked up.. but... maybe my eyes have been looking at it too long.
Your opinions.. trash and reshoot.. or does it not look as bad as I think... lol.. hit me hard, doesn't matter... I won't be angry. promise.. ;)

***Disclaimer... I am not nor will I sell something in this thread... I fully understand selling items on POTN must be placed in the Buy/Sell Forum. This is a Pentax Rainbow colored camera with some crazy thing on the top of it. I do not intend to sell my Canon 5d2 to replace it with this Rainbow colored camera. I do like rainbows... I do like cameras... the combo isn't nearly as attractive to me as a Rainbow...Colored...Camera. So... if for some reason you may or may not have noticed the above statement was 100% pure sarcasm and not an Ad to sell my precious 5D2..... I fully apologize for possibly misleading you in to thinking I was selling my camera for a Rainbow Colored Camera. Thank you for understanding.****

OK, I'm gonna say it 'cause I'm a big ole meanie and harsh and unique and all that . . .
Kristy, this image lacks depth and personality, the depth and personality we are used to seeing in your shots.
It looks as though the photographer was as tentative as the subject and the end result was a snap shot (although a snap shot with a nice clean background). I/we know you can do better, and deep down you know it too.
Get in closer, become one with your subject (like you do with your own kids) give this poor little girl a hug or two, get down to HER level and bond with her.
Do some really nice very shallow depth-of-field stuff with just her face or eyes, give her a cookie (yum, cookies).
Your little girl model tenses up almost as bad as my wife when I point my camera at her. At least with my wife I can give her booze to get her to relax a bit.

I'm fine with whatever the group decides.
On another note, I'm heading to the PHX zoo for the first time tomorrow. I'm more of a landscape girl, so any suggestions for good areas to photograph?

I'm thinking Ryan would be the expert, but for landscape type stuff at the Zoo, I would stop by the Tiger cage..

Then the little Monkey world..
http://www.aerial-perspectives.com/photos/977462958_CanjN-L.jpg
The Cheetah area.
http://www.aerial-perspectives.com/photos/977548440_QkLmv-L.jpg
But the reality is that the entire zoo is one big landscape with so much to see and do. You should be able to cover the entire grounds in a few short hours though regardless what you want to shoot.. I went there for the first time earlier this year and liked it so much I bought the membership. It really is a no brainer if you enjoy the Zoo and I have probably gone there 4-5 times since. So it was most worth it for me. I was thinking about going tonight for the zoo lights..
Also I found a link to the parks map.
http://www.phoenixzoo.org/images/phxzoo_map.pdf
I have found my personal preference to walk around the Savannah from the left to the right.
Have fun..!!

I really like them. I love the b&w ones the most. First one is my favorite. One thing that popped in my head was in number 4... It amazed me to see her boyfriend/fieance/husband is letting her be... nude.
Wonderful shots.

Like the fall look. Color levels need to be adjusted, and you may also darken the background to give them a bit more pop.
May want to do a more subtle job, but I wanted to give u an idea:
