New 70-200 IS Lens

Hi All,

I just got myself the 70-200 "IS" Lens! Yes folks it's out and ouch! it's took a big bite into my wallet!

The shop I always go to in Japan just got them in and I paid 22,200 yen ($1,850.00)
I've been drooling over the 70-200 ever since looking at Pekka's pics and it's finally in my hands!!!

The going price for the regular 70-200 2.8 is going for $12,000.

How is it else where? Is the IS version out there yet???

This is my first IS lens. to any experienced users of both types, is $650.00 worth the IS difference?

Yes, IS is worth it. Has a 100-400 L IS and 28-135 IS

Yes, it is in USA and I've been using one for a few weeks. It is a great lens and I find the IS let's me take pictures I wouldn't be able to take without the IS.

Hi all,

I'm a newbie on this forum.

I've been using my D30 for about 8 months now, and I'm looking to add the 70-200mm L Lens to my collection.

The hard part is to decide on either the older model (about $900 for a good used one on eBay) or the new "IS" model ($1895 @ BHphoto or Adorama).


My current Canon gears:

EOS D30 + 1G
Canon 20-35mm f2.8 L
Tokina 24-200mm f3.5-5.6
550EX

+ Canon G1 for the Wife

Can someone help me decide if I should shell out the $1895 for the "IS" version or get the standard version and save money for extra gears like another 550EX, ST-E2?


Does anyone have full size example photos taken with the "IS" version that they want to share?

If you can't/won't use a monopod and you need to do low light tele shots then IS might help. But it does not help on stopping subject movement. It gives you a handheld capability in 1/50-1/200 range with full zoom.

Some say IS version is a bit softer and slightly less contrasty, some say they are equal. This makes me a bit worried - I hope Canon QA is not loosing its touch? Or maybe the new owners haven't used the old one?

IS version has better weather sealing.

One suggestion that occurred to me:
Buy a non-IS 70-200 f/2.8 and a 50 f/1.4. Then you could sell your Tokina 24-200mm f3.5-5.6 and get that 550EX. If you need to do e.g. concert shots with 70-200, get a monopod.

If you don't need the speed 70-200 f/4 is a very good, cheap and light lens.
