Here are a couple of shots taken with my 20D and 100mm macro lens. What do you think?

keep in mind im an amature but heres my opinion.
The first shot i would have like more if the focus would have been on the eyelash. I think its a neat pic but the focus thing just threw me off for some reason.
With the second shot i felt like i needed to scroll to the right, kind of like i was missing something. I think it would have helped if the hair on the left would have been in focus also. The second shot definatley caught the expression in the eyes though. kudos for that.

Thanks Nathan for taking the time to look and post your impressions. I took both of these photos to a critique class I'm presently taking. I wanted to compare comments here on this forum with the ones i received in class.

#1 - the eyelid is in focus which isn't the greatest. It'd have been better if the eyelashes were the focal point.

Interesting idea on the first one - nice contours along the eyebrow ridge, nose and cheek. As noted, needs a better focal point and, I think, more depth of field to bring out the contours better (without necessarily making them sharp).

You caught a part of the mouth in framing/cropping the 2nd shot. It doesn't look right - almost like the upper corners of a scowl.

I happen to like these type of selectively framed facial portraits. Very challenging for photographer and "model." Come back with some more examples!
