Could 300D users please list:

-what went wrong
-how old the camera was (approx, how many actuations)
-how long it took Canon to fix
-how much it costed

Thanks!

Hehe. Thanks, I'm not trying to say that the 300D is unreliable. It most definitely is not, as you can tell by everyone saying "not a problem".

Please don't post in this thread if you don't have a problem, I just wanna know Canon's repair speed/cost/serivce =)

Focus Screen bracket failure, in and out of Canon in 10 minutes (its nice having the Western Repair facility close by)

Focus system adjustment (had 4" of backfocus!)
Dropped off on Tuesday, it was finished late Friday, and was avliable for pickup Monday
They also replaced the Low Pass filter that had a scratch on it (poor cleaning procedure on my part)
Total cost = Gas money to drive there and back.

One complaint I do have, is they put almost 2000 actuations on the camera, dropped off with 7200 clicks, got it back with 9000, but the focus is PERFECT.

ps-Wooooo! 200th post!

I doubt if they really put almost 2000 actuations. More like they put a CF card in there that had 9000. My shutter count has jumped several times from such actions.

Kev,you're in Ontario where Canon Canadqa is located , you should have no problem getting service. But, I've got a lens in for service that is taking forever because I'm in the west.
I have to go through an authorized Canon service facility.

I found the 300D to be an extremely reliable camera. I loved it.

When I upgraded to the 20D, I decided to sell mine but, prior to doing so, I wanted the AE lock button be repaired as it was sticking a little bit. Not a big deal but as the camera was under extended warranty I wanted it to be in a perfect condition for a potential new owner.

Best Buy was unable to fix it so, after 60 days, they offered me a brand new Rebel XT.

The above being said, the 300D is a fantastic camera and I am considering buying another one someday even though I have a 20D.

The only problem I had with my 300D was it getting stolen. I didn't even ask Canon to help with that one. My homeowner's insurance helped, though.

For some reason perhaps camerea snobbery, there are people who just delight in trying to rubbish the 300D but I love mine, have experienced no problems with it and have decided to hang on to it while I concentrate on getting a better lens.

I absolutely agree. This baby rocks. I am the second owner, and overall there have been about 20k pics taken...still rock solid, no problems. Its a great camera, now im slowly building my lens collection (70-200 f/4L in the mail, OH BOY!)

I got my 300D refurbished so I don't know of any previous problems it had if any

with me though, 2 weeks after I got it the power supply went bad and I had to bring it to canon to replace. Took 1 week and I got charges $0. At that point I had about 350 shots with it

Please don't get me wrong, I'm infinitely happy with my 300D. It's just, *IF* it breaks down, chances are it will be the same reasons as other people, and I just want to know how long it'll take and how much it'll cost for repairs.

300D is an awesome camera, no doubts with that. The point of this thread is not to convince people to buy something else. But there is a reason (for me) for this thread.

Had ours since January 2005 - 6000 pictures - not one problem. At least not with the camera. I on the other hand still can't take a decent image....

I really don't think a 300D is any more likely to break down than any other camera in its price range. By asking for posts only from users who have had problems though, you're hardly likely to receive a representative view of the camera's reliability.

Apart from the fact that I genuinely do like my 300D, I abhor the way in which some, not so much on this forum as some others, denegraate it to the point that it may adversely affect its resale value.

Had my 300D for about a year and half now and no problems. I love it and find it sits nicely in my hand (unlike the D350, to small).

I think I will never sell it, and proberbly run is until it breaks, in fact I was thinking of getting a second body.

Of course, it will break now that I have said its great!

My father recently found a good bargain on a used 300D locally. He stopped by my house on the way home and we played around with it for a little while. Unfortunately, it will not actuate when the lens is set to AF mode. I got online and from what I could find, it appears to be a broken secondary auto-focus pin.

He is still trying to decide if he is going to take it back and get a 350D or just send it in to Canon for a warranty repair. Other than that little issue, he really does like the camera.

Again, you are misunderstanding the point of my thread.

I understand the 300D is just as reliable as any other camera. I'm not questioning it's reliability.

I just want to know how much it will cost (time and money) to get it repaired, and what are the "common" things to go first.

I'm not trying to prove that the 300D is or is not reliable. If that was my case, I'd do a general survey. However, I restricted my sample space to the people whose 300D have failed to understand Canon's ability to repair.

Don't get me wrong, everyone. The Digi Rebel is an awesome camera. Get it by all means. This thread isn't meant to scare you away from buying one.

People need to read the post better. PROBLEMS with the Drebel were asked for, not those who did NOT have problems.

12 months - 2500 pictures - shutter died.
Was repaired underwarranty but Canon took 5 weeks with it.

I have only one problem but I didn't send it to Canon as it is cosmetic. The rubber on the grip is comming off doesn't effect the picture taking quaity but takes away from me keepng as new as possible for resale value. I don't know if it because of me backback or sweaty hands from holding it but it's comming off on the other side too. hpe this problem meets the thread criteria

I've had mine, (bought it used), and one night, at a wedding, it stopped working. Couldn't turn it on. I brought it to a camera repair shop, that told me they had to ship it to a canon repair center, and they said it's normally a flat fee of $238.40 to repair, and a 4 week wait. I feel lost without it.

I'm sorry for my silly doubt, but how do you guys know the number of the shots you've taken? Where can I check the total of shots in my Digital Rebel?

Btw, few shots and no problem. I'll post again when I get to find the # of the shots I've taken. :)

Cheers,
Lucato.

It's based on the file and folder numbers, and makes several assumptions. But essentially \DCIM\236CANON \IMG_3645.JPG would be picture 13645 (folders start at 100CANON so we drop 100 from the folder number; first 2 digits of the file name are last 2 of the folder name). Assumptions include that you never turned on file numbering Reset, never put in a card from a higher-usage camera, and don't count "dry firings", shooting with no card in.

Fantastic little camera!! well happy with it!! never a problem with the camera!! ME on the other hand has had a few problems!!! Found that in unkind light (duskish) it sometimes didnt like to auto focus very well!!! Manual focus however is a great invention for such an occasion!!!

My first 300D stopped working 2 days after buying it. It came up with Error99 which I couldn't clear. I took it back to the shop (Jessops, UK) and they replaced it. I got the new one home and 2nd shot....Error99 again! I've had the 3rd one for about 11 months now and so far so good (Talk about tempting fate!).

I was initially very disappointed with the auto-focusing; If I was taking a portrait, for example, more often than not the camera would choose to focus on the background and not the subject. I thought it just my handling of the camera until I got talking to a salesman (again in Jessops). He asked how the photos were coming out. When I explained what I was seeing he said that was a common problem, well known by Canon. He suggested taking it to a local Canon-authorised repair shop to have the focusing calibrated. I took his advice - the camera was under warantee - and since then all has been well in the world.

Have you used any insect repellant when using the camera? I've heard that this can often cause the rubber to peel off.

Hey there,
I sent the camera in 1 week ago today. The status is complete, but has not been shipped. It said to expect it with 4 working days. That would be less than 2 weeks from me mailing it off until I get it back. The camera shop said it would be 5 weeks, so I mailed it myself. You can see the whole sad story in general chat with the title Canon owner has breakdown in camera store. <blushes>

The total cost was 210.11 plus the cost of mailing it to them.

How crazy we got the opposite responses. Did you send it in yourself? The guy at Canon said if you send it in via a stsore it takes lonnger because they have to wait for all of theones sent in together to be repaired.

I send it in, they sent an email, I paid with a credit card and it went 'to the tech' that day which was Monday. Wednesday evening had completed on the tracking form

Hope yours comes home soon.

i didn't know where to send it in, i just took it to a local store to see what was wrong with it. they called a week after i sent it in with a price quote from canon. i've been waiting ever since then. i just picked up a 20d so they can take as long as they want.

Seems pretty pointless to me. What is the point? If you ask hundreds of people about any object, you are going to have some that had problems with the object and some with no problems.

I think he is mainly gauging the level of Canon's customer service and, to a lesser extent, the reliability of the 300D. Don't be so defensive ;-)

I got mine second hand with around 5000 it now has closer to 9000. It was bought in march of 2004.

Everything was great until last week when all the pics started looking like this:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b204/photosbyeric/Challenge%20pics/CRW_8289wtf.jpg

It was originally bought at Bestbuy with a 4 year service plan. So I took it to them and they sent it off to be repaired. They said I should have it back around the 17th, hopefully.

Definitely not being defensive as I have never owned one. I did notice that the poster later clarified his question so now he will receive the positive answers he is looking for.
