Took some candids of the grandson, here are a couple. Thoughts? Too soft?

I like them. I'm quite a newb myself so I don't have too much to say. They do look good. The first one might be a tad bit dark, but not too bad. The only thing that stands out to me is in the last picture it seems you were going for a portion of the face. For some reason the cut-off point of the eye in the right of the image seems to blend in with the dark frame. I think a symmetrical image would have taken care of this... maybe have the image stop at the centerline of the face... if that makes any sense.

Nice shots!

i like the second one. very interesting. good dof for all photos. the 3rd one is a little blurry however. besides that, i'd say just keep playing around with the shot and post processing. nice job.

No fault to find. I'd say they're all very good, each having its own mood.

I think they are very good candids. A notch above snapshot for sure. As far as being too soft, I know some will disagree but I feel kids should be a little soft around the edges.

I really like the second one. Not too fond of the third one though. I don't like the look pacifiers give to babies (especially the big safe plastic ones).

Your grandson seem very patient. The posts/facial expressions are not that for baby portraits. His expressions are rather grown up. #1 make his head/face look like he's 20.

Thanks for the comments, points taken.

He's a little camera ham... point it at him and he does his thing, which usually means stopping whatever he's doing to watch you take the shot. As far as the expressions, he's big-time animated, it's why I love taking candids of him, not to mention his eyes.

My kids get like this. I have pretty good luck putting the 70-200 on and sitting back while they play and I get some good pictures out of it.

Well, I don't particular care for the cropping in the second two, always looks funny to me to have the top of someone's head chopped off, or half a face :) Still quality-wise good photos.

I love the close up effect in portraits. I belong to another site and often hear that it is "cropped too tight"....guess a matter of opinion but I say "zoom in"! Handsome boy!

Thanks again for looking and commenting.
I've gotta add... those arent cropped, except #3, where I simply removed some from the left side.
