Hi all,

I have a canon EOS 1V plus a 500mm L USM IS F/4 lens. I'm planning to move to digital photography and the price of the D1-D1s is really high for me at this moment.
I shoot wildlife in the tropics in very low light conditions, usally 1/30 or 1/60 at full apertude and ISO 400. I only use fill flash.
I want to buy the 10D but I have some questions:

-Can you notice the lag when you press the shuter button, how many ms it is??

-Will this camera autofocus as fast as the Eos 1V at this low light conditions?? (I really need fast autofocus!!!, I shot fast moving birds in the canopy and shrubs).
With the 500mm L USM IS and EOS 1V the images pop up inmediataly to perfect focus.

-Will this camera stand for the demanding conditions in the jungle?? (between 30 and 40 Celsius and 80 to 100% humidity)

I will be very happy if someone could help me in this topics...

Thanks,

Pablo.

Pablo,

The 10D camera is designed for the serious amatuer, semi-pro shooter. It is not built like a tank, or water proof, or even water resistant. I do not believe that this camera body would stand up to the conditions that you would subject it to. You should be looking at an EOS 1D or 1DS, as these cameras are built inside the EOS 1V shell. They virtually will perform and feel like the EOS 1 Series camera bodies.

OTOH The 10D does perform quite well under lowlight conditions considering that it is a $1500.00 camera. The shots that I have taken at ISO400 look better than most print film of the same speed, the focus is fast, but not as fast as the EOS 1D or 1DS. The shutter lag is imperceptable and not noticable compared to film bodies.

Just my $.02,

Cal

I've got to side with Cal on this one...

...the 10d is not built to be in that type of humidity. I know that with the D30/D60 I have had some problems with moisture shooting outdoor concerts in July, where the temp was about 90 degrees and the humidity between 85% and 95%.

...the 10d has a metal body, but is built under the same concepts, so it doesn't have tight sealing like the 1v(Film) and 1d (digital) series.

2 c more for the pile.
