I'd slow the shutter down so you get some prop blur. As it is, the piston engine aircraft don't look realistic because the prop is frozen. Look at the last image - it almost looks like a picture of a model was pshopped onto a windows background.

In the first pic, the T-birds against a cloudless blue sky, it doesn't look like they're very sharp. This could be panned, or since the sky is cloudless behind them, I don't think a shutter fast enough to freeze the action would be a detriment in this shot.

I think the T-birds shot looks sharp. I think the jpeg compression makes it look bad. As for the props, 1/250 is the fastest you ever want to go with prop driven airplanes. With practice sharp pics can be had at 400mm, and 1/250, and even 1/160 and slower. We all are guilty of wanting razor sharp pics, but frozen props is a big no no.

I certainly appreciate the tips on slowing down the shutter speed to show action with props, who knew? I thought the goal was to freeze the action altogether. I decided to check on other member's photos and sure enough, the props are blurred.

Photographing aviation is not really my thing but it did give me an idea of what to expect with this new lens. I definitely appreciate the feedback.
Thanks, everyone.

In the meantime I'll stick with nature and portraiture where I feel more sure of myself, ha ha.

Incidentally I just shot this photo of a female praying mantis a few minutes ago disposing of a bee's stinger before devouring it in a few minutes. It's not a great shot but at least it's interesting.

Nice shots. I wondered if anyone here made it to the show. I didn't get there this year and wanted to see some pics. Thanks man.
Here is the same F18 with a different hellcat earlier this year in Akron.
Like the mantis also.
