Everyone says PSE3 is the software to use. But I can't get a print out to match the screen...not even close. And it is not my monitor vs printer. I checked by using MS Digital Image and the results are great match the screen almost perfectly.

Does anyone know anything about what I am missing in control with this software vs. PSE3

What features and controls do I not get with MS Digital Image vs. PSE3

Go to Image/Resize/Image Size.

Make sure the box next to Resample Image is UNchecked. This way the resolution stays the same when you change the size of the image

What settings exactly are you using when you do the print? A screen shot would be better than words.

I just downloaded the trial version of PSE3 and printed a test image which was processed in Adobe RGB color space. I printed the image directly to my i9900 printer from both PSE3 and PSCS and my printed pictures are identical. I scanned them in and they look very close to the original. See the attached. The left top is the scan of the PSE3 print, the left bottom of PSCS. The bigger image on the right is the original.

I've also attached a screen print of the print preview screen. Take a look at the color management options I specified. For the print space I specified the ICC profile that I downloaded from Ilford because I used the Ilford Classic Pearl paper for the print.

BTW, when I specified Relative Colormetric for the Intent, the print came out a tad darker than for Perceptual.

If you are specifying the same options that I am, except for your printer profile of course, and still getting colors that are way off, then I would say that your color monitor profile is probably at fault. Is your monitor profiled using profiling hardware and software? Or are you just eye-balling it?

Another thing you might try is to turn all color management off in PSE3 and see how the prints turn out. With color management turned off I would suspect that you should get results similar to what you are getting with MS Digital Image (assuming MS Digital Image is not doing color management).

Use a print space/profile of "same-as-source" and relative, and use ICM with relative in your printer driver. PSE will always be better than any microsoft program.

The following is a snippet from another thread that Canon Shooter started:

HP The 1CM Color Management selection essentially turns off driver- based color management Selecting 1CM Color Management tells the printer that incoming color is already color-managed, and the driver is not to do any color conversions to the color image data

So, if you are going to specify ICM on the printer, then you are essentially telling the printer that it is not to do the color management since the printing program (i.e. Elements) will be doing it. If that's the case, then you should NOT specify "Same as Source" for the Print Space as that would be the same as telling Elements NOT to color manage the print. In order for Elements to color manage the print, you have to specify the actual ICC profile of the printer/paper combo that you are using in the Print Space field.

I disagree. If I were to choose the printer&paper profile I am using with my R1800, my prints would come out so, so over brightened they would be garbage! What works is "same as source". Why do you want to mess with the colors that were recorded? Just print them!

You are entitled to your opinion and if it works for you, more power to you. :)

BTW, are you using the sRGB color space or Adobe? Just curious.

I used Adobe Gamma to calibrate the monitor with printer. But if it was the monitor vs. printer why would MS Digital Image print match what is on the screen.

Today I found that if I use RawShooter to do RAW editing and then import to MS Digital the print looks fine and matches the screen. In fact I edited a photo in PSE and then saved it and closed. Opened the same saved image in MS Digtial Image and the image on the screen even had more nature color and the print not only matched the screen it was more true.

Anyone have any idea what might be wrong. I have features in PSE that are not working either. Such as emailing, slideshow. It some times works on the screen, but when I try to burn CD it seems to work until the very end and then it fails.

Is it possible there is just something in my system or system settings that is keeping PSE from working properly.

They are better after I did the Adobe Gamma, but still not true and not as dramatic as MS Digital.

I did notice that when I do a print preview in PSE it looks different that what was on the screen. It looks better.

If it's true that MS Digital Image Pro does not do color management why do the printed photos look so much like the monitor. The results are very good not only from color but also the resolution and contract.

Guess I can use the Canon software or RawShooter to do RAW editing and import to MSDI to get the print results I want, but why won't PSE do this?

I think I am going to call Adobe and spend the $40 to see if they can get it fixed. They won't talk to you without paying
