Surprised nobody caught it the first time around. I like it, but I think I would have included a little bit less grass to try and get the top of the tree in the frame. The open space of grass works for me, but 150 pixels less of it wouldn't ruin that affect and would frame the shot a bit better.

Neat shot though. I probably would have also cropped off some of the right of the photo, the tree is a bit centered and there isn't much that adds to the picture to the right of it.

Mike,
In my opinion that is a lovely peaceful scene, of a warm summer evening by the river.
The size makes it difficult to see the entire scene, so there might have been people opening your post and quiting to see because of that. At the best the image should be 800 pxls wide.

As you mentioned it is a bit noisy. I suspect you wanted to minimized the risk of people moving during the shot so you cranked up the ISO. That's OK, but that can be fixed with Neatimage or a simillar software.

I took the liberty of passing your image through Neatimage and resize it just to show you what I mean. If you wish I will remove it immediatly.

Also you have some blown highlights, and that's a bit more difficult to handle. That means your exposure could have been better. meaning you could have checked better the light in the scene by metering several spots and figure out an acceptable exposure for the highlights.

But your image is very good in the feeling that it conveys, and that's very important, at least for me. The composition is a bit affected by the big tree having been cut but I guess that including it all would be out of the question as then the space of empty sky would be too much. I like the placement of the tree though.

All things said it is a very pleasant image that makes us wish we were there to enjoy the moment.
Well done!

I've been in Germany only on business, never went to Heidelberg. All I know is Ruesselsheim, Wissbaden (lovely place) and Frankfurt. Must go back and see the rest ;)

If your ever back in germany, you should definatley make it a point to see Heidelberg, its probably the coolest city ive ever been in, in my life. and ive been to some pretty awsome cities.

wow, that noise reduction software works a wonder.

The reason for the lights is the exposer was very long at 20 seconds, this was taken at about 1 at night, with no flash.... so yea. Its the look i really like, you can see in my other post as well. Long exposure shots are my favorite.

i resized the original,

sorry bout that, my monitor is 1600x1200, so this 800 pixel maximum fills up only a quater of the screen for me, i didnt realize it was such a bother. Anyway, if anyone wants a bigger size of it for a background or anything(i gotta stop flattering myself, you take better pictures anyway) just ask me for a certain size.

Nice pic. I agree with the comments on noise and blown highlights. Try to make two exposures next time, one for the highlights and one a bit longer, then combine in PS. Or perhaps the one exposed for highlights would be sufficient as you might be able to extract details from the shadows.

Just to correct a tiny thing beside photographical topics: Heidelberg is not located at the Rhine river at all. The river you can see in Heidelberg is called "Neckar". ;)

But nevertheless I like your captured scene a lot!
Best regards,
J.

ok.. so the points about the noise, the blown highlights, and the name of the river have been covered... what else is there?? hmm... oh yes.. Nice picture!! ;)

I think the framing is fine. presents a nice feeling.

Regardless its a lovely shot - night photography trainsformed almost into day by the long exposure - its a good example of those strange places that only photographs can go...

very nice pic,
W/ tons of atmosphere.
I dig the surreal glow.
The tree creates a forboding presence which I like.
Good work!

Thanks, I didnt think i would get this much positve review. Next time i am at the river i will try to capture more similar images, but ill try keeping the exposure more under control, It seems some peoplel ike the overexposure while others dont.
