something inside my 100-400 has gone :( there's a tiny bit rattling around and the push-pull zoom is getting jammed. so i believe it needs a trip to canon for sorting out, anyone know how much a general service costs at all (anyone from in the UK)? one arm and two legs perhaps...?

Ring them and ask. Most people I know that have used Canon UK's lens service, have done it under warranty and you should be ready for at least two attempts for them to get it right. Not the best bit of Canon service I'm afraid.

oh...they're not that great then? and two attempts for them to get a repair right?! I hope that doesn't mean forking out twice for something that should have been put right the first time round...

Well, at least arms, legs and kidneys come in pairs ;)
In my experience, at least Canon service in the Netherlands, is perfectly capable of getting it right in one time....

As with anything ... the better the definition of the problem the more likely (perhaps!) they can sort it out. Personally, I would ask specifically in writing that they test IS, AF and MF works perfectly before returning it!
