View Full Version : Windows Vs. Mac VS Canon vs. Nikon

My best friend is a rabid Mac fan, as most of them are. She is also a rabid Nikon fan. Seeing how I prefer Windows (well mainly due to to cost and software availability) and Canon I was wondering if there was any correllation between the two. I am sure there are rapid Windows/Nikon people and Mac/Canon people but just wanted to take a count. Since this is a Canon forum, I know I will have to word this carefully. If anyone thinks of a better way to reword my poll let me know!

I dont' think there's any corelatiionship between the camera brands and computer platforms. I'm obviously a Canon user but I use both computer platforms at home, 3 PCs running Windows XP/W2K and two Macs running OS X. One of my Mac is even running XP, W2K and Linux under Virtual PC for Mac. BTW, how come you don't have Linux listed in the poll? I'm sure there are a couple of Linux users out there, too. :)

Well I was just wondering since you know how mac users tend to be known as...fanatic...my friend takes it overboard. I don't think she has even considered or researched Canons, just "knows" nikons are better. I know most people in here say that its personal preference and not that one is head over heels better than the other one is. Most Windows people out there like Windows but don't think macs are bad, like the mac people think Windows is the devil. Or maybe my friend is just a weirdo:)
As for Linus...linux...whatever...I only know one person that uses that and I didn't want to make the poll to overly complex. :p

Actually, the number of linux pc's usually outnumber the windows boxes in my house.

I retract my previous submission and now state to be:
Linux/Canon

I think platform preferance shows a similarity with religeuos preference.
For every type there are a large number of moderate user's who are not to fussed that others might think differnetly, but when you but there is always a minority in each group who are fanatical about thier preferance and believe only thier prefered type should be used.

While there are some fanatical Mac users I think you will find they are a tiny minority.

There is possibly a similarity between Canon and Nikon users, or anything else where Strong Brand Loyality is evident in the market.
Look at the Ford vs GM debate, or American vs European vs Japanese.

Moppie,
Don't want to start another Mac PC war, we've been down that road before. But, I would have to disagree about fanatical Mac users being a tiny minority of the Mac community. From what I have seen most Mac users are at least somewhat fanatical, Apple wouldn't be around today if they were "indifferent". Apple truely has one of the strongest brand loyalties around!
And quite honestly I have never met a fanatical windows user, fanatical gamers who use windows and tweak their machines yes, but not fanatical windows users.

Oh wait a minute I found a fanatical windows user.

I've always went Canon and PC over anything else. I use my PowerMacG4 for movie editing purposes and used it for my Canon G2. When I got my Canon G6 I tried using the updated Zoom Browser but the new canon software doesn't work on MacOS9 which forced me to do all my digital photography post processing on my PC because I like Canon's Zoom Browser.

I think there IS a correlation.. but not necessarily in numbers.. but in "reasons" given for the choice made.

The only problem is that this is a Canon forum.. so you are only polling 85% of the people you want to poll.. (the other 15% being the market share dedicated to those poor deluded Noink S.O.B.s ) KIDDING!

The correlation I see is that Canon and PC users have solid grounded reasons why they use them.. Noink and Mac owners (who also drive VW Bugs or Subarus) share a common unexplainable touchy feely compassion for there inanimate objects that is unquantifiable to the scientific mind...

well, I should never start an argument with the moderator, but I beg to differ.

I used PCs heavily for years. I wrote a substantial program for running neurophysiology labs for windows. I will never voluntarily use a PC again. I've seen PCs get infected with viruses, worms, and spyware. I've seen large corporate networks run by experts brought to a grind. I've watched PC security experts lift credit card numbers off PCs over the internet (as demonstrations of what can be done).

Mac OS X and LINUX, both based on UNIX, are vastly more secure. There has never been a successful virus attack against a mac. I could write a virus in a couple of minutes to attack your PC, but I don't have a clue how to go about breaking into a mac's security.

As a secondary reason, I got fed up with incompatible hardware and software for PC's. Ever install new software that overwrites the DLLs of some older software from another company? That doesn't happen with a mac. The time it took me to set up my first mac was under 5 minutes -- installing 2 printers, a scanner, a palm pilot, enabling internet and mail -- not a single driver to download, not a single incompatible IRQ or memory address. As a mac owner (and Linux for 1 system) I spend less time maintaining my computer and more time using it.

So, I can quantify why I love the mac....
1) better security
2) easier to maintain and use

kind regards, and no offense meant,...

Another thing for photographers to consider when choosing a platform is support for robust color management.

I do think Apple is one of the companies people are most loyal to. I say with good reason, but I admit, sometimes it does get a bit excessive...

Mac is the only way to go.

Your toaster, stove, fridge, tv, or house doesn't crash... so why should your computer?

i'm biased to Canon But Nikons are good
And was brought up on windows and never used a MAC but told that MACS are great for image editing - so i think your poll will be biased as the users are rather than factual of best platform
and as this is a canon forum - even more soo :) :)

Andy_T
14th of September 2005 (Wed), 14:39
Haha ...

the poll clearly proves that Canon users use both Apple and Macintosh, but NOINK users are computer illiterate

No wonder NOINK doesn't really bother to come up with new competitive digital camera models, as the users won't be able to view their images anyway...

Best regards,
Andy

Best tool for the job is the one you can operate.

There may be better tools out there, but if you can't use them, it don't mean diddly squat.

I think that Nikon have a great reputation in photography circles, but plumbed for Canon after owning a G5. I have had macs for decades, so can hardly be expected to lust after a pc. It comes together beautifully – for me.

Isn't it great to have a choice?

David.... no argument from me.. I had tongue firmly planted in cheek..

I thought the smilies and references to VW would establish this a simple jab to make fun of the established stereotypes...

I suppose it would have been plainer if I had ALSO mentioned that Noink/Mac/VW drivers probably all install the toilet paper roll backwards as well!!!!!!!!!

Old news, no big deal, still be OSX and that is what really counts, the OS.

IBM couldn't seem to make a G5 cool enough to fit in a laptop.
