..I have an old 430EZ Canon flash sitting around; can I use it with the D30? The D30 manual does not mention the use of older external Canon flashes, so I am a little reluctant to try. On the other hand, why not?

"E" indicates EOS compatibility, so I see no reason why wouldn't it work.

OK, as a relative newbie to photography, and not owning a D30 (but lusting after one! ;) ), my question is: why not just try it out? Can you break a flash just by trying it on an incompatible camera?

Yes you can use your 430 EZ but you will not be satisfied.
I have put both my 430 EZ and the 540 EZ in the draw 'cause they don't speak with my D30.

You have to use the flash manually and you will not be able to use the autofocus. the light will naturally be there, but that's it!

The good solution is the 550 but I got a 420 EX and are happy to work with it. It gives light as good as the 430 EZ, and you can adjust the strength of the light at the top of the D30.
It's really worth the money as long as you already have spent the lot on a D30.

Any of the flashes from the 380 EX on should work with the D30. You do need the current model ring light. I have a 380EX flash and it works perfectly with the D30.

The point is that the flash has to be an EX - not EZ. None of the EZ will speak to the camera nor listen to it...

If you place an old EZ flash on the D30 it will block for the AF-light on the camera. Therefor you have to focus manually. Since there is no communication between the flash and the camera you also must set the flash manually.

I have used an 540 EZ together with the D30 for ten months but are noe using the 420 EX with pleasure.
Compared with 550 EX it gives a half stop or so less light and the red focus light are not as strong as the light on the 550 EX.

Hello,
I am new in this forum.
I bought a few days ago a second hand flash 430EZ without the user guide.
Do you know if there is any web site where I can find it and download it, I dit not find any.
Thank you

Guys:
I can speak for the now retired 380ez...I have been using it....bouncing it off walls and ceilings with the camera on Program and having great results.

The below pic is under a table....with the camera
turned upside down bouncing the flash off the concrete.
Camera on program.
