When I buy the 10D body, flash, CF cards and batteries, so initially I will skimp on the lens. Yes, I know this is bad practise, but it is what I shall do. The question I'd like to ask is this:
Does anyone here have experience of the Tamron 28-200XR please? Some reviews really rate it, and some slate it! What is true??

Thank you,

Rufus,

UK

My first canon lens was the Canon 28-105. It is the best lens i can afford after emptying my bank account to buy my first canon body, the EOS 3. I was a hobbyist back then and does not pay too much attention on performance and output. My motivation then was to have a camera and a lens so i can shoot pictures. Its a very nice lens, it is fast and the pictures are sharp to my standard.

Thanks Arnie, I will certainly deposit that info in the old memory bank.

Anyone with Tamron experiences please?

I've paid my life savings to get a 10D, a grip and a basic 50mm lens but know I want more. The 50 mm lens is cool, cheap, fast, pretty sharp, focusses well and gives good results but is a bit limiting. I've bought a couple of tat zoom lenses (stitched up a bit on ebay) but they do extend the capabilities of the camera.

I think the 10D is a fabulous camera but won't ever give me all it can until I get some decent lenses. However, I would rather use the camera and put up with the limitations than wait. As well as that, I'm not a pro, and the sharpest, cleanest, high res images are not my goal and are not so important to me.

Try using the search facility for your lens on this board. I found a couple of threads that mention your lens and can recall a few good comments about Tamron, but then only about a few lenses and not often! Here are those threads, there were more have a look around :eyes

Tell us how you get on.

A good think about digital of course, is that you can take your camera to the shop, shoot some shots and go home and take your time to examine them. I suppose also, if you have the Tamron lens already you could take that to try on the camera.

I have the maybe, 6 years old Tamron 28-200 f3.8-5.6 AFS/LD. I bought it as a back up / knock around lens for my back up camera body. I have shot it on slide and print film in all lighting conditions. I have used it on an EOS A2E and EOS 1/1N. The best pictures I got were ok. Most everything else I've shot with it is pretty below par, Image softness, unattractive bokeh and color fringeing. It was a REALLY (I mean REALLY) contrasty piece of glass which can be good or bad depending on what you're going for.
It currently sits on a shelf in my darkroom collecting a rather attractive layer of grey fuzzy dust. Perhaps in time I'll use it to hammer the odd nail or two into the wall or as a doorstop or paper weight.
The experience of that lens has effectively put me off of tamron.
The new lenses might be great but the same was said of the tamron I purchased. As always your results and mileage may vary.

Currently, my two favorite knock around lenses for the 10D are the Canon 28-105 f3.5-5.6 USM and the Canon 20-35 f3.5-4.5 USM.

Good luck to ya!

Thank you Martin.
You've obviously gone to a lot of trouble.
I do appreciate it very much.

Thank you also.............

Oh dear! I am a little concerned by your comments! Maybe I will just have to "suck it and see" as they say.

I intend to get the 10D body very soon now.............

I purchased the 28-300 XR with my 10D last week. I'm happy with the lense.

I don't have gobs of cash to spend on glass, so My other two lenses I'm comparing with are a Canon 35 - 80, and a Canon 75 - 300

The Tamron is sharper than my 35-80, and about the same as my 75-300

Oh, i forgot about the tamrom. I was able to borrow from time to time a tamrom 28-200 to complement my canon 28-105. I don't know if its the same model you are trying to get feedback on. For me its an OK lens, it gave me a longer zoom coverage but the images are rather soft compared to those taken by the canon 28-105.

Well you are off to a good start with the 10D. But, as an alternative, you could have bought a used D30 and used the money you saved to buy lenses. But, if money is really tight I would recommend the Canon 50mm lens. If you can afford a little more, the Canon 28-135 would give you more coverage in more situations. Later you could add the Canon 75-300. As always, buy the best you can afford at the time. In the long run, You will be glad you did.
