Here are two photos taken just before sunset. I believe the light effect is known as a corona.

So what exactly is the light effect. Can you describe what I'm seeing?

The sun's corona is only visible to us during total solar eclipses. http://science.msfc.nasa.gov/ssl/pad/solar/corona.htm
The Corona is the Sun's outer atmosphere. It is visible during total eclipses of the Sun as a pearly white crown surrounding the Sun. The corona displays a variety of features including streamers, plumes, and loops.

What you photographed is just some freaky looking clouds. And yes, that IS a technical term. ;)

Yes, the solar corona can only be seen during an eclipse. However there is an atmospheric (earth's) phenomena which is called a corona. See this link:

This is not one of those either. If the sun really is near the horizon, then this appears to be a top portion of a sun pillar. Here is a picture of something similar:

I have a nice picture of a complete pillar on my website. In fact, mine shows something called a "sub sun". If you look closely at the pictures the sun itself is in the dark cloud, but the sub sun below looks like the real one.
