70-200 f4 for Infra Red?

Hi.

I had a 50 1.8 with a Hoya R72 IR filter that I used for infra red on my 20D.

My 50 broke about the time I started doing IR photos, so I was wondering if I could use my 70-200 f4 for infra red. I have read that the lens can do it, I was just wondering if the difference in apertures between the 2 lenses (f1.8 VS f4)would be really bad since IR on a 20D requires a long exposure.

A new Hoya R72 sized for my 70-200 is about the same price as buying another 50 1.8 lens. I don't really want another 1.8 because it only lasted 4 months (going to go with the 50 1.4).

2 Things. Can you explain "broke" Second can you post some of your IR pics and what sort of settings you used. I ask as Im looking at the same combo as you have been using. I just dont want to break my 50mm :)

I opened my Lowepro camera bag one day and my lens was in 2 pieces. The outter barrel and innder part were seperated because the plastic mounts on the inside holding them together had broken. I had not dropped or jarred my camera bag in any way that I know of.

Canon wanted $50 to fix it. Ya right.

here is a sample of the 50 1.8 with hoya r72. This was shot at f11 for 20 seconds. i am still practicing, i only had the chance to shoot about 10 ir photos before my 50 died.

if you do get an ir filter, make sure you have a tripod because of the long exposures. you have to pre focus, then put the filter on the lens to take the picture because you can not see through the viewfinder at all with the r72 on.

All I did in PSE was auto levels and auto color correction. If you have the full PS, you can do more like swap channels which looks really cool

I like the shot. I thought I was a bit daft when I could'nt see anything with the IR filter on. Put it on my Sony F828 and I could ... umm where is the nightshoot button on the Canon 20D.

Sometimes you have got to wonder about some people :)

I have 3 IR filters they were made in china picked up all 3 for $80NZD so we will see what they are like 1=700 range 1=800 range 1=900 range. Last weekend did the same with closeup lenses. 3 for $40NZD.

Haveing the 50mm means lense wont move when you put on filter :)
