Hi folks

Thank heavens for this forum. You've just saved me a fortune.

The apparently infamous eBay scam is still on-going. After spotting an ad on ebay.co.uk, I was offered a new, sealed, boxed 1D for 1400 pounds sterling. But... it's in Spain. Send the money by Western Union, blah, blah, blah. Will ship immediately by FedEx.

I don't have digital yet, but I really badly want a 1D for my sports stuff, and I so nearly fell for it. But something didn't quite smell right, so I spent a few hours doing some research, only to eventually discover that IT'S A SCAM. Just like all the others.

This particular eBay user's ID is "linfutu". The name he uses is Damon Glab and his email is patgormanthom@nycny.net

He says he has three 1D's, and I think he was also selling a 1Ds for a whole lot more.

Here's the detailed email I received from the little s&*t. Compare and contrast with any similar too-good-to-be-true offers you receive. Don't fall for it like I so nearly did.

Cheers

Paul

Hi!
I still have one available for you!
I will try to respond to your question and possible future questions.
The camera is new and has been purchased March 2003 from a canon dealer.
It has two years of international fully transmissible warranty. It was purchased as Demo for an Expose on
the eight of March in Madrid. It has never been used or
opened or touched. It is in its original box and comes with all accesories. We took three and we used just one of them.
I work for the Spanish branch of an UK Fashion Agency.
From this moment i will be your "guide" in closing this deal. I have the
permission to decide how to sell it.
1. It is better for you to know that the items is
brand new ,sealed in the original box and it is has
international warranty provided by the factory and
it comes with all accessories that you need.
2. SHIPMENT ---this is a thing about you shouldn't
worry about because i believe that it is my
responsibility to deliver it to your home.We can do
in 2 way in each of them i am going to pay for all
charges:
-UPS 2 days
-Fed ex 2 days
It will take 2 days for the package to arrive to
you.The shipping costs will be payed by me and i will
also pay for the insurance in case of any damage
happens during the handling and shipping,so i will be
protected in case off damages and you too.
3.THE WAY TO PAY -----there are many ways to make a
payment but this one was recommended to me by a good
friend of our family who is a banking manager.
We will have to end the deal through western union or moneygram in
a very secure way for both of us in way that just a
few of people know, because of the birocracy from Spain if we
use COD or escrow i won't be able to pick up my money in lees
then a month in stead of 2 days. The payment method that i am talking
about is wire transfer with WESTERN UNION or MONEYGRAM.It is very simple and secure
because you will have to go personal to an office and send
the money from your name and address to my name and address.Look one
more thing, when you put the money to WESTERN UNION please don't tell
there
the reason for you
send the money because here in this country I must pay somes aditional
taxes when I recive the founds(you know busines with
electronic...),please say you send the money to your friends or to your
partener. After
that, you will receive a confirmation number and i want you to send me
the
following details :
-the sender name
-the sender address
-the amount
-the confirmation #-MTCN (money transfer control
number)
-the receiver name
With all this informations i will be able to check the payment and after
i will see that sis OK i will send
the package right away and also mail you the TRACKING NUMBER from the
shipping.
4. REFUND-----After the package arrives you have an 7 days period in
witch you can send the package back for a full and NO QUESTION refund,
but you will pay for the shipping and handling back to me.
Here is my name and my address where you must send the money:
First name: DAMON
Last name: GLAB
Address: CALLE FUENTA 24
Zip code: 29011
City: MALAGA
Country: SPAIN
I look forward hearing from you.
Warm Regards,
Damon

If it's too good to be true, then it is, no "probably" about it.

I ran into that when I got my Nikon D100. Someone saw me bid on a unit here in the US, then emailed me saying they had a brand new one for $1400 (when they were going for $2000 even on ebay at the time).

Their profile said their location was US, but the email address was out of Germany and I was supposed to wire the cash to an address in the Check (sp?) Republic. It didn't take too many I.Q. points to figure out that this didn't add up.

YEA RIGHT. I emailed back asking if anyone has ever been stupid enought to wire the cash.

When I was selling my D100 a few weeks ago (eBay, USA) I got 6 emails that were variations of the same scam. First of all, the bid price was $1400 - and this email offers to pay $2500 if I can "ship today". Now why the f#$@k would someone pay twice the asking price for an honest deal?? Furthermore, they were adimate that I take and process a (STOLEN!!) credit card directly. Absolutely no PayPal, escrow, or similar service. They also wanted me to use some fly by night shipping company that would deliver to a P.O. box. Once again, there are apparently people in the world who are stupid enough to fall for this.

No offense to anyone that has ever been nailed by something like this, but if someone is dumb enough to wire cash to some foregn country blindly - off nothing more than an internet post - deserves to loose their money. Unfortunately, the complete lack of common sense on the part of some people keep scams like this in business. They wouldn't do it if they didn't have an endless supply of suckers.

The fact that there were multiple attempts to scam ME really torques me off. I think I may put together a comprehensive guide to avoid getting screwed on ebay and posting it as a warning notice. :)

Thanks for sharing the public service announcement though! Hopefully this has kept someone from parting with their cash for nothing.
