Went to pick up my XT body only today and it appears they sent a kit instead of a body only. Now I don't need to pick it up until tommorrow and the store said that they were going to have one shipped fast, but I got thinking. I have a charity car show to shoot on Saturday and only the 50 1.4 to do it with (that will be challenging) I'm waiting for a couple of weeks until the nwe L glass 24-105 to be released before I start building my new glass collection wchich other than that lens will be all primes. I was thinking of calling the store back and proposing that if they can split the difference on the 18-55 kit lens, then i would take that and then I would have a bit more focal range versatility for Saturday. They've already said that if the body doesn't come in tommorrow that they would split up the kit for me. This could save us both a bit of trouble and I'd geta kit lens at 1/2 price to use for a couple of weeks. I would probably get atleast my money back on it. I woudl hope for a sunny day on Saturday so that I could stop the lens down a bit and get fairly sharp results. What does every one think?

If you get the kit at a good price go for it. I used mine about 6-7 times and found it Ok ... absolutely 'fit for purpose'. I suspect that buyers would find it more attractive when you come to sell too.

The advantage of the kit is that it gives you a semi wide angle at a very affordable price . You may in fact be happy to have the extra 18-24mm capabilities until you invest in a better wide angle. Then, your prime will probably be better at 50mm and the 24-105 (when released) will do the rest. You can always sale the kit lens if you find out that you do not need it. You won't loose much on it.

If the price is right, I would buy the kit. You just might find tht it comes in handy on that car shoot. You can always sell it later as you fill that wide end gap. No matter how low I go, I wish I had something wider.

I had the kit lens for quite a while, and found it fine. It's no L, but stop down a bit, and it's really pretty good. It's also really light, so if you're carrying your camera all day, then it's nice to not notice it :)

Yes I will have to see this afternoon. It will really depend on if my body only comes in or not. If not I may have more leverage to get the kit lens at good price. The last time I ever owned the kit lens was quite a while ago when I owned the 300D. At the time I didn't know that stopped down I could get better shots with it. Might be fun to see what I can do with that cheap little thing this time around if it comes cheap enough.

i still use the kit lens for wider angle situations, i find it a decent lens for the price. If you are getting it half price than go for it!
