View Full Version : 10 D - Error 99 - lens not closing - to less power to the le

I had problems with my orignal 1,8/50 an my Sigma 2.8/28-70 and so i tested and tested and found something very interesting, which is the same in both lenses. Sometimes error 99 with my Canon and mostly error 99 with my Sigma, no errors with my 100-300 Canon.
So i tried with my 50mm because it is more often working than my Sigma and has also the problems.
The problem is, that the lenses will not close the lens every time to the correct value.
I made a serie of pictures, going from 1.8 to 16 and the pictures were more and more overlighted, so i used the little button to check the focus before making the picture and i recognized, that the lens will not ever close enough. The difference between the Canon and the Sigma with this fault is, that the Canon will go on making pictures without error-message (mostly) but the pictures will be to light, the Sigma will directly produce the error 99.
So i think, there is to less power going to the lens. So i think, the problem can be solved with a firmwareupdate.
What are You thnking, did You recognize something similar?

Same experience exactly with Canon 50 1.8 II. Occasional error 99, and blown out images.
Any thoughts as to how to resolve this? How do I contact Canon?

The Sigma lens is a know issue. The aperture isn't getting enough power, so it is slow on stopping down. Therefore the blown-out pictures. But the EF 50/1.8 shouldnt react like this..
Also, this is just the case with some older sigma-lenses.

I checked with another photo forum and found users with the same error issues. However, in my case it turns out NOT to be 10D related. My lens will not stop down. I put it back on my film EOS, set various small apertures and hit the shutter button. The diaphragm tries but won't move more than a stop. The good news in my case is that this is Canons least expensive lens. I'm now in the market for a new one.

Hi volleygerd- I am having the Sigma 28-70mm 2,8 EX Aspherical lens (is this the same lens we are having?) and been using on my 10D without the similar problem you have experienced.
Do let us know if you are bring it back to Sigma for some lens upgrade as mentioned by Rodbunn...cheers

I have the same problem with the Canon 1.8/50mm and Canon Service is telling me, that there is an error in the Camera and i shall send it to the service. Perhaps i will do it, but not now, because my Canon 100-300 is working very very well, i have no problems with the Tokina 2.6-2.8/28-70.
About the Sigma, i have to wait a few weeks and i will report, if there is something changed. My Sigma is without the "EX", it is the former model.

Just got my 105ex back from Sigma after 5 weeks, they put the wrong house number on the box & the courier sent it to the wrong town... took a few phone calls to find it but it's working fine now.

i have the same problem with the 50mm 1.8, it seems to happen when i select 1/60 shutter speed. it sound like the shutter not closing fully.
Is it the lens or the body? I have took about 1200 pics with my 28-135UIS and a couple with 75-300U & never experienced this error.
The 50mm 1.8 is used, maybe its knackered??

I have the 10D with a SIGMA 28-70mm aspherical lens and had the same problem when I first got the camera two months ago. Sigma fixed it at no charge and I got it back in a week!
l also have a Canon 75-300mm IS lens but that worked fine.
Unfortunately, just yesterday I got the same error 99. I have taken over 20,000 snaps with great results until now.
Canon is having me send it in for repair. They say it will be at least 3 weeks. l guess lit will de back to film until then.

Just to add to the topic...I'm using a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III and I get a similar error..."err-99" on my week-old 10D. Also, with the same lens on a EOS Rebel 2000 I get a "low battery" indidcation when I attempt to use the lens.
THERE IS ONE EXCEPTION. With the lens set at 75mm and at f4, both cameras will still successfully take pictures. But at any other f-stop (whether I choose another f-stop, or when it's forced by zooming in on an object), bother cameras will throw errors.
Since this seems to be a predominantly European board, note that all of the equipment are "US" models....if that makes a difference.

thats very interesting.... must be power related. Im going to try taking pics on a full charge and see what happens, I suggest you try the same.

CORRECTION:
I fully charged the battery and did some more tests. The camera will take photos at whatever focal length...as long as the aperature is set wide open. f4 for 75mm works, and the lens will continue to work all the way up to f5.6 at 300mm...but anything other than wide open throws an error code. This is the case for BOTH cameras.

Yup, no effect on battery status. Mine's going back tomorrow to Canon (the lens that is)

For those with error 99 on your 10D especially with Canon lenses as some Sigma's need to be rechipped, try cleaning the contacts on both the lens and camera side with an eraser and maybe some alcohol. There have been some cases in other forums that this cleaned away the problem. Make sure to never touch them with your fingers as the skin oils can sometimes cause contact problems.
Oh yah, don't touch your lens with your fingers either :)
