Pekka said in his FAQ that he use KPT 6 Equalizer. I can't get it. Metacreations is gone. It was free for download to July the 31. Please let me know where I can get it now, or has anybody of our G1/G2 members this and like to share with me ???

Thanks, Hans

Hans,
I can't help you with KPT equalizer...
But, Fred Miranda's sharpening plug ins for Phototshop are astounding (And Free!)

http://www.fredmiranda.com/Action_profilesPage/index.html

They (there are 8 bit and 16 bit versions) were written for the D30 but work beautifully with G2 Files!

(Yes, I'm giving away my trade secrests!)

The problems with Freds action is that they require PS 5.5 or 6.0. Another PS action (an updated version) is available for $25 that Pekka used to use, is Ultra-Sharpen 5.0 Pro
http://www.ultrasharpen.com/
I don't think it will work with PS 5.0 LE (which all G-1/2 owners have) but it does work well with Photoshop Elements. The advantage of this strategy is that there is some user selectivity in not sharpening smoother areas like sky and the gaussian blur reduces the haloing effect.
Here is a DP Reveiw thread describing what I think are very similar steps as in Ultra-Sharpen, but again I don't know if they will work on 5.0 LE. It may be similar to Fred's?

You are right it is not working with Photoshop LE and I tried Freds suggestion. It's nice but is all not the right or perfect way.

I think Pekka's KPT is the best, but I can't get it.

Sorry my english is not perfect.

Best regards, Hans

Hans,

Sure you can get KPT6. Do a search and download with Go!zilla, available at www.gozilla.com

You'll have to decide for yourself if it's unethical or not to do so. However, you have stated that KPT6 is not available for purchase.

Hi,
I am new to the forus and I just bought G2 last week after reading so many good comment from this site as well as inspiration from Pekka. Anyway, I only have the photoshop 5.0LE and wonder if the tools below will work for PS 5.0? How much does it cost to upgrage from 5.0 to 6.0?

Thanks,
Lingthai

Thank you so much, I will try this.

It is not unethical for me, because it was free download a few weeks ago.

Thanks again, Hans

Lingthai,

I'm afraid that the Fred Miranda actions will only work with Photoshop 5.5 and above.

Additionally the cost of upgrading from 5.0 to 6.0 is very high. (check at http://www.Adobe.com )

I am not sure if Adobe Photoshop Elements would work. It is much less costly (about $50 sfter rebate), and even comes free with some printers and scanners. I know that it will run some Photoshop plug ins that would not work with 5.0.

Good Luck,

Dave

P.S. Does anyone know if Elements will work?

OK! This is a working demo that in use (and results) is similar to the Fred Miranda action that I previously mentioned. It will work with many forms of Photoshop ( 5.0 and Elements included! ).

http://www.sonic.net/ickybits/ultra-sharpen/download.html

Mike K mentioned it above and I've tried it in 6.0 and Elements and it is impressive.

Hi all,
I am new to digital camera processing and please bear with me if I have dump questions.

1)Why does everyone looking for KPT filter?
2) Is KPT better or much better than USM from PS?
3)If so, can anyone convince me with some good quality pictures that clearly show the differences?
4)Can anyone suggest the best setting for KPT and USM? I have tried both a many setting but still cannot distinguish which one is better. If there is a clear distinct different in quality, under what conditions (lanscape, macro, portrait,...) does it make the difference?
5)Finally, I enjoy looking at Pekka's gallery especially the sharpness of the pictures. However, even if I tried to set the same KPT equalizer setting that Pekka did, I still cannot produce the level of sharpness that he did. There are also some other parameter in the KPT equalizer but do we tweak with this at all?

I hope some of you or even Pekka can share some thoughts with me and the rest.

thanks,
Lingthai

I have a technical page on my photoweb that shows comparable images using different sharpening tools and settings. click on:

http://129.24.208.200/personal/Photography/Main%20pages/Sharpening.htm

Each small image sample is supported by a larger image, so click on the small images to see those.

Hope this helps,

cheers,

Hi Philip,
Thanks for the quick response. Yes, your investigation is great and I wonder is that possible to compare apple to apple between USM and KPT?
Any recomendation for best KPT setting for macro?

Thanks,
Lingthai

Thanks all for your Ideas and suggestions.

I did what sceptreg2 suggested. I have downloaded the KPT 6 from gozilla. And I had luck, anorther gay send me his serial-number. I installed this as a plug-in in the Photoshop 5.0. LE what was delivered with the Powershot G2. It works perfect. I am very happy. Thank you to all.

The KPT equalizer does not have the same parameters as USM (amount, threshold, etc) so you really can't set them to the same "settings" and compare directly. The KPT equalizer does something a little more sophisticated than USM, much like UltraSharpen pro and other PS actions do, I'd surmize.
