I just ordered a canon EOS 10 D this week from Adorama.I was wondering what size Compact flash card to buy. Now I have a Nikon Coolpix 990 with a 256 mb compact flash card. About how many images can I get on this 256 mb card, useing the best image mode on the camera.

the larger your card and your files the faster the data transfer rate you should go for, although on the 10D with USB this is less critical than on the 10ds with firewire.
Adorama has a 32x 512 MB Lexar card.

Absoloutely, the larger the better. I use a 128 MB & 256 MB which are OK. Mind you, to date I have only shot best quality JPEG. Using RAW will reduce the number of images hugely. I sometimes wish I had bigger but then, can make do.
I enjoy still life and street photography so, having huge flash cards doesn't really bother me. If you are into travel photography, I expect that shed loads of storage is important. My advice; you will need plenty but see how you get on with what you've got before you make a large purchase. If you are wealthy, no problem, if you're like the rest of us, you might want to save your pennies for something else like a good, dedicated flash, or batteries or grip or lenses or....

It depends a lot on what format you are using. I exclusively use RAW, and accordingly have two 1GB microdrives. Never had a problem with them. Cost rumored to be below 200 now at some places. With storage, more is always better.

A 1gb card will hold about 390 high res JPEGs or 135 RAW images. You can do the math for using smaller cards.
