Although this is your typical not so cute finch, and I know most of you are not so thrilled about bird pictures, but I just want opinions on the framing and DOF.

I have taken the liberty of doing some post processing on your photo: firstly, regarding your question on framing I have cropped the photo as I feel that with so much background the bird is rather 'lost'. On the question of DOF I can't see a problem but I have increased the contrast to make the Finch stand out more.

To me the second one look too dark, some detail about the eye is lost. I agree the framing in the original is a bit overwhelming. Some of us love bird photos!

I like the first photo with the cropping done by colliwalker.

I think the original with a simple crop would be the better picture. IMHO

I don't think there's anything wrong with the first photo. I love the way the greenery in the background frames the bird. I like it. The first fix looks a bit dark and the second one looks a bit blown.

I don't think I'd change anything with the first photo honestly. I like natural framing. I think it adds to it and really makes you look dead center at the bird.

It's a cute lil guy.
The background is a little overpowering - maybe partially desaturate it or lower the contrast. The bird could use just a touch more contrast/levels boost, but not so much as to lose the delicate colors and textures.
