Hey,

Tonight's the night the most reflection (of the sun, of course) off the moon of the whole year! Basically, gaze and admire the beautiful moon!

Munch on mooncakes!

Just stare at the majesty, you don't even need any equipment! I'm going to try to capture some of that magic with my new (to me) Sigma 70-300APo (thanks Tyger!). Happy Mid-Autumn!

Happy Moon festival right back at you. As if it was meant to be, I took a shot of the moon tonight from Sweden and this is what I got when I cropped the picture in 100% (sigh, why dont I have a longer lens?). Shot with 1/200 s @ f/8, 100 ISo and with my 200 mm lens. Another 800 mm and it'd be fun!

(the smaller moon in the corner is the actual size of the moon recorded by my camera.. not much fun to look at when it's that small!)

I'm stuck watching the Emmy Awards with wifey. Maybe I'll sneak the tripod and the 500 f/4 out later. Thanks for the 'heads up.'

Nice shot, Petra.

Here's my try at it, using my just purchased 70-300APO. It really strained the lens, it's very soft but I couldn't ask the little one for that much!

Maybe I'll stop her down next time. Probably would've been much sharper. Anyway I busted out my Minolta 10x50 and wow. Just wow. I stared at the moon for a good 15min but then realised I have astrophysics homework to do hahaha. Anyway, gaze and admire her beauty!

Yeah, stop down, and use faster shutter speed. I used 1/200 @ f/8 at 100 ISO and didn't do any post processing at all (except that extreme crop of course).

But you're right... the moon is amazing and it doesn't need to have its picture taken all the time. :)

works like a charm cyberpet. Interesting to see the view of the moon on your side of the globe vs. our side of the globe:)

here's one from tonight....makes me wish i had a telescope.

Tyger, yeah it's kind of amazing to see. And it's even more freaky to see it from someone in Australia, it's upside down! :D

Here's a look of the moon from Pennsylvania, just a skip and a hop south of Toronto. Not much of a difference as far as the orientation of the moon goes. :)

That's kool, hopefully someone from the other side will post a shot!

KevC, That lens is capable of shooting a good moon shot, try the specs CyberPet suggested, i'm sure you'll get simliar results.

belmondo, looks like a great image, but you did go too heavy on the sharpening. Can I have your lens too? :D

Thanks, Petra. If you come to the desert, you're more than welcome to use it.

That was a 'quck and dirty' job last night. I used 'smart sharpen' in CS2, and I agree that it's a bit heavy. I will probably go back and redo it one of these days. I was basically pleased, though.

is the moon actually a space ship? or a giant ball? see Petras pic? at the bottom there is a "button" or "dimple" and then there are "seam" linse running from it around the moon.... I wonder.....Hmmmm.

Tom,
Very detailled and sharp photo!
Is it me or the moon has some purple areas showing on the upper and left/midle? Never noticed that before.

No, it's not you. I didn't desaturate the image when processing. Like I said, it was quick and dirty. I was really more interested in the performance of the lens, and was well pleased with that.

I'll do a better job and repost the image later.

Besides, everyone knows the moon is made of green cheese.

I'll check with Kenny to see when his next world tour is and if he's going to be swinging by Sweden. Maybe he can take my 100-400 with him to give to you. ;)

I always call that "dimple" the Moon's belly button, it looks like one!

That's interesting because my image has the same purple colors. I though it was something in the air (and it still could be) but after seeing the same colors in Tom's shot, I'm wondering if maybe the moon is colored purple in some parts. If we can have a blue earth, why not a purple moon?

That was what I was realy wandering. Purple gas?? or purple in the moon?
Strange I never heard of it.

Oh, Tom...thanks for clearing up the green cheese bit, I was under the impression it was yellow cheese... :p

Yes, the moon is made up of yellow cheese and that's true everywhere but in the California desert, where the moon there is made of moldy cheese and hence the green color. :D

Great moons, y'all. I missed the full moon, having been sentenced to night shifts all weekend. Can't explain the purple - maybe the AWB was fooled slightly.

Caught it a couple of days before full, but its not my best moon shot. I had to reduce it to 1/2 size to obtain crispness, and I did push sharpening as high as I dared:
