I just bougth the new Canon S50 Digi cam. Now i ask myself witch CF Card i should buy for this camera. There are the regular, the highspeed CF cards and the Microdrives. My question now is, can the camera use the highspeed function of these CF cards or shoud i just buy a reglular CF card?

I have the Canon S400 and it can not take advantage of the high speed cards. I was told the same about the S50 which was the other camera I was considering.
I have purchased several cards. I was told it was better not to as someone put it, "put all your eggs in one basket". Meaning if a card fails on you, you are not stuck high and dry because you purchased one super large card than a few smaller ones. I would not go real small but 256 MB is good.
I purchased 2 of the Lexar 256 MB 12x cards on Amazon for about $43.00 each after rebate (good only through the end of April). Very nice price. I had done a lot of asking around on dpreview before I purchased and people were happy with them. Here is a link to the cards:

Hope this helps,
Mike

Is it true that the S400 cannot take advantage of the high speed cards? If so, where can I verify this? I just paid $$$ for a 512 MB high speed (Sandysk Ultra) card and I would have a few words for the salesman who convinced me that I should get it if I can't reap the benefits of it. I read the entire manual and saw nothing about this in there. Carter

Carter,
I have been told this in several posts on dpreview. I would check with Canon and if they say no, it can't take advantage then I would go back to where you bought the card and give them a hard time.

I use standard Dane-Elec and Sandisk cards, 128 & 256 MB, and they work fine for me. I think only camera's like the D1s really need high speed cards, because they offer you the possibilty of taking 8 fps.

Don't bother asking Canon about CF speeds. I already did and they danced around it like Fred Astaire (remember him???). Bottom line is that I think the earlier replier is correct in saying that unless you have a digital SLR it probably isn't going to make any noticable difference. I general, my research suggests that Sandisk and Lexar are the "market leaders." Lexar offers a lifetime warranty, and had an excellent rebate which expires today.

I bought a 128 Sandisk card and it works great. With my G2, I bought a 30x Transcend 256 card and I find it is slower than a regular one. Maybe it's just me but I think the regular cards work just fine.
