I'm not sure that I'm not being too paranoid, but here goes:

By listing our equipment in our sigs, can somebody determine who we are and where we live? The logical conclusiion is that they could then break in and steal our stuff, since we told then we had it. (Of course, some of us could be making it up to impress!)

I hesitate to even post this, but it's been bothering me for about a week. Someone at work had their credit card # stolen off the internet recently and I guess I'm reacting to that.

So, don't laugh at an old man.

Haha ... that Mossberg might be even more interesting to a burglar than some Canon lenses ...
he'll just burglarize your home when you're not there.

I think that the system we use allows us enough privacy so that this cannot happen, unless we give out our address in the forum. If we are careful about who we deal with and the information we give out then we should be safe.
If some one wants to spend the time to try and track me through this forum all power to him but they will have a very sophisticated alarm system to deal with only to find that the camera equipment is not there most of the time.
I would be more worried about someone seeing me taking pictures and following me hoem than being traced through the forum.
Anyway everything is insured.
I always say I worry about the things I can control and forget about anything else. If someone is determined to steal it then no matter what I do they will succeed.
Life is too short. enjoy the pleasure of our past time and the friends we make here.

Joe,

I hope I can displace some paranoia with probabilities.

Your credit card info is more likely to be stolen by the waitress who takes it out of your sight for a few minutes than by internet hackers.

And your camera equipment is more likely to be stolen by the multitude of people in your own community who already know where you live and what you have, than by someone miles away in cyberspace.

There are no gaurantees in this world, and the people willing to take a few calculated risks seem to have more fun and accomplish more. Take reasonable, appropriate measures to protect your property, then find something else to worry about.

well, im always open for company, come on over!
if ya want my stuff that bad... lol. Frankly, im more afraid of the thought of my wife being home alone than a burglar stealing my stuff... yesterday i came home to find her cementing slate stepping stones to my fron steps!!! i almost had a heart atttack, now i need to dig out my chisel and mallet to "clean" up all the excess cement.... oh what fun it is, this thing called marriage!

Ok.

I told you the post was too paranoid.

Thanks for the input. Now I only have to worry about Hurricane Rita, the IRS and the effect of inflation on the profits of the oil companies!

Thanks again.

Here's a couple of numbers to throw at you that I found on the 'net...
All the major oil companies made in the order of $5Billion profit this past quarter and Exxon-Mobil is in the $50-$55Billion area for Q1 and Q2 combined.

What I'd like to see happen, IMHO (members of this forum, I hope not, but just an idea) is that there is a natural disaster that rips thru oil producing and Crawford, Texas and trashes the oil industry like the Gulf Coast and whips the living daylights the oil industry. Now to see the oil industry brought back to Earth is what we need! We as a nation can't afford this much longer. I was talking with some British people here locally and mentioned it was over a pound a litre which is in the order of $9 an imperial gallon/$7.20 a US gallon! ...not cool!

That sounds like a pretty smart idea to bring the US fuel prices up to the British level.

And this will help greatly to move the US standard of living closer to that of Vietnam and Bangladesh, so you don't have to be be embarrassed any longer...

That was what you had in mind, right

What I was saying was the world is getting ripped off, and especially over in the UK/Europe and just so the certain few oil tycoons can have enough money to last 1000 lifetimes. They need to stop being so flipping greedy and spread the wealth. I'd just like to see the money the oil industry has made come back to them a million fold in bad stuff. Think about it...as you transition to "the next life" you can't bring that gazillion (insert unit of currency) with you. The greed is what has my goat and cuts severly into my funds for doing stuff I want to do.

Someone looking to use one of my pictures found my home phone number in a couple of minutes by searching public phone number databases on the Internet and then simply calling all the people with my name in the general area. It's easier than you'd like to think. It's equally easy here to get your home address via your car license plate number, just call the registry and ask. The only thing to do nowadays is make it as inconvenient for burglars and thieves as possible. My car, bike and apartment has locks and alarms all over them and chains bolting stuff to concrete. It's sad to have to do this but the police is too slow to matter and the insurance companies rip you off so all you can do is bolt your stuff to the floor or keep it under your pillow at night.

That was something I was going to reply :) Its not a Mossberg but a Winchester, but the effects are very similar ;) Plus, while on photowalks, my Glock 26 walks with me. She loves taking pictures :)

And that's why I have a German Shepherd pacing the house...
This reminds me of a story I heard from a friend who goes to the football regularly... (Could also be an urban legend, but it's funny all the same!)

In Glasgow, the main football stadiums (Soccer to the americans) are located in neigbourhoods which could best be described as dangerous... There are a lot of quite shady characters walking around there, and the kids are among the worst.

Car parking facilities at the stadiums are limited, so most people who drive there end up parking in the street. The kids walk around, offering to "watch your car" for a nominal fee. "Watch your car for a pound?" That kind of thing.

Of course, what this really translates to is "Give me a pound or I'll smash your car up while you're at the game"... Most people just go along with it and give them a pound.

This one guy parked a van in the street, and was offered "Watch your van for a pound?"

He responded with "There's a big german shepherd in the back of the van, watching it for me"

The kid immediately replied, "Can the dog put out fires?"

Needless to say, the kid got his pound... :D

I'm running out of room in my bag, so all I can fit in there with me is my Walther. I own no Glocks, no shotguns, none of that. All I have is a Walther PPK (the BB version, too! :-D ), a couple of .22 mag scope rifles, and a .357 mag "Dirty Harry". I sold whatever else I had when I decided I needed a couple of L's ;-)

By the way, is a German Shepard really gonna protect your house if someone decides to rob you? I'm not sure I'd feel completely safe with just a dog...

Back on the original topic...I don't think anyone can find out where you live by your signature, nor would they go to all that trouble just for some camera gear. I'm sure there's plenty of places right in their own neighborhoods where they can steal a couple grand.

I don't know about you guys, but Brinks guards my house/business quite nicely.

PS, He LOVES to play hide n Seek until you're well inside His domain, and He can cover the entire yard in something like 3 seconds, I dont think its humanly possible to outrun Him.

After the adrenalin eased back on me, I had a good laugh about how the intruder looked like a professional pole vaulter going back over the other direction. Only He didn't have a pole.

I guess one can find out your details if you live in a really small town and you are the only person walking around with a DSLR. Most of us post locations that are too broad...

And of course, I will start adding the set of knives and the hammer to the list on the right and call it the deterrence list :)

Dogs suck for protection... I mean a spur of the moment attack they are fine but if someone really wants to go through the trouble of stalking you, robbing you and all that, they will get the dog out of the way. All it takes is some kind of meat or food with some poison in it and doggie boy is not stopping anyone. I love dogs, I got one now and at one time had three so Im not putting them down at all, I like to think of them as not so much for protection but as a great early warning device! As for security issues here, i dont think there are any people trying to find us and steal our stuff, If so, then there are allot of "other" things in my house id rather protect, my wife and myself being the highest two on the list!

Anyone who really wants to get you will get you. Levels of protection are the best you can do since you'll never have levels of security. I'll take a dog as one level of protection - I have more.
