I definitely don't like your PP. Very unnatural looking.

Is that natural light I see reflected in his eyes on the top and bottom shot? Regardless, you need to get MORE of that light into his eyes, from a better angle. Shooting up the nose is rarely the best angle for anyone. Your baby isn't sitting up yet, so you laid him down, I get that, but look at those two shots and imagine if someone had put their hand behind the blankets and raised his upper body UP. (If there is no second set of hands, prop him with pillows). You would have a much better angle and you'd have reflected light from that window (??) giving nice catchlights.
That second shot had potential, but there is no light in his eyes, which is never a good thing. It is the light in the eyes that can make or break a shot. Keep practicing though, and you'll get it. Within a month or so, he'll be sitting on his own and that will make it much easier. Babies are never easier to photograph than they are as newborns, or at that 6-8 month range, where they are sitting on their own, are very smiley and not crawling yet.

Also, when you are doing tummy shots, like on the second image, bring the baby's folded arms in closer, so they aren't protruding into the foreground like that. They will often unfold them and stick them out again, because that is what babies do. Mom, or YOU, will have the job of retucking/folding them over and over again, because that is what photographers do. If it comes down to it, you may have to have mom hold them in position while you get the smile, instructing her to let go and pull out when you get a smile and snap!! (I don't always hold out for the smile, wide eyed innocent is just as good, so I make sure I have a good one in the can, and THEN I can work on a smile at my leisure.)

Thank you so much Sue! It wasn't natural light, it was from my flash. I understand what you are saying about him sitting up, and getting more of the light in his eyes. I'll try the posing techniques you recommended as well. Again, thank you for the very helpful criticism

I can see that, but I like how I did it this time, usually I go much more overboard.
