Re: Stilt

Your specimen is close to what we call Black-necked Stilt (Himantropus mexicanus) in North America. However, this one has different head feathers than the North American one, so I don't know.

The closest I could find in my books (on Australian birds) is the Black-winged stilt, but again the neck and head colouration patterns are different. I might need to invest in a book on NZ birds :-)

Re: Stilt

Thanks Sandy, Thomas.
Had a browse around the net and think I've identified it as a Pied Stilt (which is a subspecies of the Black-winged Stilt).
