The most incredible thing I notice nowadays (that people believe is professional) is the control of depth of field. While it is a valuable and beautiful tool, we all can do it now in Photoshop. The dumbest thing I ALWAYS see is the poor editing skills used in making it seem like this wanna be photog is putting things out of focus naturally. The lines they've used around couple's hairlines, or other areas they want to include in the "out of focus" portion is very noticeable to my trained eyes.
If you cannot achieve the depth of field you would like to look as shallow, use a bit of extra care in Photoshop to soften the edges of where your depth of field starts and stops. If a non-professional looks at it long enough, it will become a noticeable error.
