Just the general pondering of someone who cant decide...
Was after a Wide angle prime for Full Frame and am trying to decide between the Canon 24mm 1.4 mkII and the Sigma 24mm 1.8 What I like about the Canon:
What I like about the Sigma:
I assume the Canon performs better in terms of sharpness? Also, was wondering how both lenses fair with focusing when Micro Adjustments isnt available? What do you guys think? thanks for the help!

I made that comparison in real life (as, usually, I am not shooting black and white targets), we are owning and using both

Those lenses are in very different classes, the Canon is very higly regarded, and the sigma
is plagued by sharpness(less), focus and vignetting problems, while the Canon is one of the best lenses in the business. see : www.photozone.de www.the-digital-picture.com Odin |

Oh, nice, thanks for that! I think I actually saw your thread last year when I was trying to decide between the sigma 30mm 1.4 and the sigma 24mm 1.8... hmm... so its really soft around the full frame corners aye? hmmm... the macro ability adds so much potential though >.< haha do you have many other shots with it on Full Frame? As I said, we use both, 24L on fullframe and crop, but Sigma only on crop (we expected borders too softer compared with 24L on 5DMKII) You should be careful with AF, 24L is much more accurate than sigma (for macro works it doesn't mater, but for action/sport 24L is a killer). I wouldn't expect same level from sigma compared to canon which is 3 to 4 times more expensive For fullframe and if budget is OK, 24L is definitely the best choice (sharpness, contrast, colours, flare, AF) .. on crop Sigma is a cheaper and more than just acceptable alternative.

I have had and used the Sigma 24mm 1.8 Macro for quite some time on my 5D2. The Macro feature, while not true 1:1 macro is great. It is one of the closet focusing lenses I have ever had the pleasure to use. Sharpness is great in centre but drops off around the extreme corners. The Canon is better for sure, but the Sigma has it's place and for me more than meets my needs as a fast wide angle prime. If Sigma did decide to upgrade the lens to have 1.4 and HSM I would probably upgrade. Until that point I'm happy with my choice and the lens gets more than it's fair share of work on my 5D.

Haha thanks both for your opinions, definitely appreciated.
I guess I really do need to look at them as two separate lenses, one a top notch lens and the other a specialty lens that works when used right... I wonder if I can justify having both then haha, might just try finding a second hand sigma for now and see how soft it is for my purposes... Cheers!
