Challenge #330 Containers
Wait a minute, I thought 3rd place meant never having to....Oh well, here we go. Let's stick with the container theme. I am looking for color, repetition, pattern, the 'artier' the better. Anything goes, have fun! The results are in: Thanks to all who played this week. So glad we made it up to 7 (would have been awkward to have more winners than losers.) I have to say all of the photos met the ‘I’m looking fors” brilliantly and I would feel very comfortable with any of them in the winner’s circle. mrshobden, “Quirky Coffee/Tea Pot Containers Spotted on A Wall In Essex”: Another simply wonderful still life! I think this met the challenge beautifully. I love the repetition of the gray color and rectangular patterns accented with the splashes of green. I also really appreciate the found art quality of the subject and of the entry itself. teekay, “Plant Pots Galore”: I had to do a double take on this one. This could have been taken at the old K Mart in Boulder! Trust me, as an avid gardener I’ve spent many afternoons there. I’m a huge fan of our mountain backdrop and it looks like yours is, at least, every bit as nice. But getting back to the contest theme, the part of this picture that draws me in the most is the hanging basket section. I might have made it more of the center of focus and cropped out some of the rest of shot. Maureen Souza, “ Color On My Patio”: Gorgeous, bold colors, fun mixed colors in the zinnias, nice shot Marie, “Binfull”: Art is in the eye of the beholder. Lots going on in this shot. I loved the magazine flipping open on top of the bin. What a story our trash tells! Kevan_G9, “on the rocks”: I was really looking forward to seeing what you would do with this; not disappointed! Very creative answer to the challenge. I loved the choice of a monotone color and the layers and layers of repetition as well. Nicely done! pwdieter, “model railway containers”: Another very creative response to the challenge. I really liked the choice of using the targeted focus area. Sharp, vibrant colors, and as always the viewer is drawn into the picture and wants to linger there. Fd3s,”Basilica”: I’m not sure if this is your first entry with us or not, either way, welcome! As to your entry, all I can say is “Boom, goes the dynamite!” Stellar shot. The colors just pop like crazy against all of the gray. I love the angle, the juxtaposition of the containers and the new change they represent against the ancient basilica. Well done! And the winners are: 3rd Place: ‘Basilica’ 2nd Place: ‘on the rocks’ 1st Place: 'Quirky Coffee/Teapot Containers Spotted On A Garden Wall in Essex' ________________________________ To submit, click Post Reply and put your Photo Name in the Subject Line. The contest is now closed. I will be back later in the day with the winners. Wow, my head is spinning with the thought of trying to choose only three of these!

If I'm not mistaken the containers are bracing the Basilica against falling down even more after the quake. thanks for judging another contest, I love these assignments and look forward to Linda's this week. |

Congratulations to the winners! My imagination deserted me for this challenge and all I could think about was shipping containers (and I couldn't even find any of those locally) until I spotted a very ordinary display of flowers at a local supermarket and took a hasty and boring shot.
Marie, I thought your original title of "bin laden" for your overflowing garbage container was absolutely brilliant! Why did you change it - perhaps felt it was in bad taste? |

Thanks Kshootit for the placing. Boy, everyone's shot circled the bull's eye this week. I knew I needed to be on my game seeing the coffee pot & teapot photo.
Here again was another opportunity to alienate myself with my neighbors. I walked out onto our driveway with a baking pan full of some of our glassware and started fiddling with different placements and concepts. First, the glasses were left empty, then I sprayed them with the garden hose to mist them up and then finally, I filled them to the brim. I then walked around the drinking glasses from all different angles and fired off several shots in the the process, both macro and zoomed too. I'm pretty sure the neighbors were looking out their front window at me. " Hey Harold...he's at it again! Look, he's taking photos of their glassware placed in their driveway, f'r Pete's sakes. What does she see in him? I dunno" Yeah, the B&W conversion really did a nice thing or two to the photo. First, it removed the color variables and simply highlighted the textural differences instead. Also, the results almost appear sketch-like, which I liked. I then tossed in a small bit of blue filter, just to suggest a cool-refreshing touch. Least that's what I thought. Looking forward to the next romp. Bring 'er on Linda.
