Default Hey - what are the green and red crescents

showing up near the moon right now in North America? I'm in Missouri and have shot at the moon crescent mostly just to figure out how, etc., and two nights ago there was a faint red crescent and a faint bluish-green crescent near the moon crescent. Today it was pretty obvious that the green crescent was another spherical object - is it Venus? Was the other Mars?

Mostly curiosity. I had originally wondered if they were an artifact of some sort.

Both Venus and Jupiter have been near the Moon the last couple of nights. Download a program called 'Stellarium' for free and see what the sky looks like where you live.

But how large are these green and red crescents? If they're roughly the same size as the Moon then what you're seeing are reflections in your optics. They can be especially bad if you're got a 'protective' filter on your lens.

But post an image and we'll tell you for certain what you've got.

Thank you - I was wondering about whether or not I was getting reflections.

I considered even taking off the UV filter last night. Now I know I should have!
