Default iBird App worked I think

A member who posts in here a lot told me about this app. At first I was not going to buy it because of how it and so many other apps access too much info on your phone. I figured I would try it out and if I did not like I would get my money back. I am really good at making people give me money back. They find out very fast that it is just easier to give it back then deal with me Anyway I went to this portion of the hillside by my house that looks over the creek and there were no birds at all. It was dead silent, so I busted out my new Motorola Razr and fired up the app. Downloaded the Cali Towhee calls and let it run. 5min went buy and nothing so i shut it off, as soon as I did 2 of them popped up on a tree branch about a 100ft from me so i started it back up. They started to come closer, just hoping along the ground(I think they are unaware they can fly since I always see them on the ground). Then 2 more came out from the bushes to me left and this guy in the pic came and stood on the rock in front of me about 25ft away. I had some frustration with the camera since it seems to have some issue nailing focus since friday. BIF shots are not going well anymore. It will not grab focus well and not fast at all. I snapped off around 30 shots of 2 of these towhees, and these 2 were the ones that looked the best. I also tried the app for the spotted Towhees since they tend to be shy, and 2 of them came but stayed low in the bushes. Only one went high enough to see well but he was still behind some branches. I honestly think they just do not like having their picture taken(neither do I though). So I think the app really brought these guys in. I did try the RTH calls since there was one flying around and he did come down towards me and low but again AF failed me. I think it had more to do with the fact that he came at from the direction of the sun and he was totally dark so no contrast for the AF to look at.

Hmmm. I have iBird on my Kindle and have taken it out twice. Both times, all bird chatter in my vicinity stopped dead. Don''t know what I've done wrong....
Glad it worked for you - lovely shots!

If you didn't read the posts in the link, be careful there are laws against this in certain situations.

I am not worried about that since I am not shooting in areas where ti would be illegal, nor calling birds that are threatened. thanks for the info everyone. I will be sure to use it responsibly.

Sorry to hear you are having issues with focus. So what do you think is going on? Do you think this is a camera or lens issue?

These are great shots.......when birds are nesting, it's probably not a good idea to use these apps. They're already under a great deal of stress, trying to defend their territory. Using these apps make them think there are other birds coming into their territory and they go and investigate, instead of helping with feeding and defending the nest.

The thing is you have to know what calls to play , how often ,how loud. Some calls that you play will actually scare the target bird away. Since alot of bird calls are territorial calls. Electronic bird calling has caused a stir but done correctly its a useful tool . But then again it boils back down to knowing the habits, behaviors and in this case the call(s) of your target bird(s). Responsibility is a key word here.
