Default 420EX Focus Assist Beam Not Firing?

Greetings from new user!

In searching this site, I have come to the conclusion that the 420EX focus assist beam does not function with the G3. The manual does not list the G3 camera in the lists of functions, so I am not even sure if it is a "Type A" or "Type B" camera... would anyone care to comment?

Thanks in advance!

Rusty

Hi Rusty,

Yes you are correct, the AF assist beam does not work with the G3.

Someone from this forum actually contacted Canon and they confirmed this. You may find that link by searching for "AF assist beam".

The G3 would be a type A camera, but that has nothing to do with the AF assist beam.

The 420EX manual was produced before the G3, that is why it is not listed.

Why isn't Canon actually going to do something (like redo some of the camera's algorithm). I am sure quite a lot of people have broght this up to Canon's service desk.

Maybe the best thing we could do to ask Canon to Please fix these nuisances is to make up a petition page where everybody interested on an specific improvement or fix could sign in, a Most-Wanted-Fix sort of poll, with names, surnames and emails of voters.

They (makers) release always with the pressure of time, and left some, less used features uncomplete; if they see no significant number of people asking for this, they won't touch a single byte of the camera firmware, which is everything they have to do.

And I guess that enhancing the way poor autofocus on the G3 is something more than advisable, specially for somebody that has spent money on both the camera and the flash.

Another tip: Use AWB or DAYLIGHT for WB when using the 420/550. Using Flash WB causes an unpleasant yellow cast which can be corrected with software.
