Okay....sorry for the disturbing title....
I currently own a EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro (non L) with Kenko extension tube set DG, and also a MP-E 65mm F/2.8 lens. The problem, is that I just don't know WHAT should I take pictures of using the MP-E 65mm. I don't take photos of insects & bugs, so cross that out..... I need some inspiration and motive for using this extremely tricky lense.... or otherwise I will be off to the used market to sell it away..... Please enlighten me!!!! |

You can check out the Flickr MP-e group:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/14414927@N00/pool/ But it's mostly bugs. So either get to liking bug photos or someone's going to get a good deal on an MP-e. |

Ill swap the mp-e 65mm for a 70-200mm f4
Kidding, although I do want a dedicated macro lens, reversing and extension tubes are starting to p*** me off

forgive me for asking, but I cannot help to think, why did you buy it if you do not know what you will shoot with it? I find it a little strange.

What are you shooting with your 100 mm and tubes? Shoot that with the MP...but bigger magnification...

I agree with Martin. I think you should also ask yourself what can't you shoot with the Mp-e 65mm lens? You can literally pick up your camera, put the lens on, and within feet of where you're sitting there are dozens of subjects to photograph up close.
Most of us do enjoy macro of critters and plants, but the possibilities are nearly endless. So I guess if you didn't have the motivation or idea of what to use the lens for I might put it on the market and get something you know will be of more use.

i really enjoy the macro section of photos, lots of those appear to be shot with the mpe-65, at least lots of the ones i can see the exif data on. i've thought about getting one, but am trying to find what i can't do with my 100L that i could do with the 65. i know the photos i see that are shot with it are amazing.

Yep being able to shoot at 5:1 on the MPE allow it to break past pretty much all zoom capabilities held by any other macro lens. It is L quality, manual, a telescoping tube, and the light loss is not as bad as using 66 inches of extension tubes on a reversed lens. Don't get me wrong though, you will have to use a flash beyond 2:1 in order to properly expose and see the subject.

Coffee grounds, torn paper or knife edges, book bindings, electronics, ball-point pen tips, wood grain, seems there are plenty of micro/macro subjects besides bugs and flowers. Throw some interesting light into the mix.
Funny about the 'macro' thing, there are so many so-called macro photos out there that are really just close-ups IMO. In most cases a whole flower is nowhere near 1:1. To me, the whole point of having an MP-E would be to shoot things that are less than, say, 2mm across. Otherwise just shoot with the 100 plus a tube or two.

If I am not able to find interesting bugs, then I try anything. Join in the super macro guessing game on the competitions forum, it will give you some ideas and some fun too.
