Default Brand new lens and the Rodeo

Bought a new lens, and how convient was it to have a Rodeo to go to the next day. It was pouring rain, so a little tricky to play around with in such un-ideal conditions.

CC always welcome!!

Maybe it's the rain, but I'm seeing sharpness issues. Can you give info on SS, etc.?

I agree, it seems soft, but I think it may be the rain
By SS do you mean the settings?

ISO- 400
Apeture 2.8
Shutter 600-800 on most as light was fluctuating
Shot from covered grandstand
WB- cloudy

I can post one from yesterday when it was bright and sunny if that helps.

Why would you have the SS so low with erratically moving animals? Could you not have bumped ISO up a bit and shot faster shutter speed?

No offense, but you need a new monitor if you don't think there are issues.

They look as good as you're going to get. Don't you guys ever shoot in the rain?

No offense man, but I just personally don't like the psuedo almost 3d looking over sharpened and over saturated images, - at all. Photoshop and over sharpening has become an out of control fad. Hopefully we get past the "look how sharp I can photoshop my images" stage soon.

My setup.... two calibrated 27 inch Apple monitors running at 2560 by 1440 each... they are just fine.

It is a matter of taste.... not performance of the equipment. Lets not confuse photoshopping skills versus hardware performance. Not everyone moves the sharpening slider to the right. Works for some... not for everyone.

Thanks for the sermon. I was speaking of sharp in regards to focus, not 'over-sharpened'. I like how you used the opportunity to give me your state of the union on photography

To the OP, it must be the rain, but they just don't look sharp to me and no amount of bluster from others is going to fix that.

Maybe it is the rain. That I'm not sure of but something doesn't seem quite right. None the less, grats on your new lens. What a beast! Color me with envy

Hi,
thank you for the feedback everyone. I think it may be the rain , here's a picure of my roommate's cat, looks fairly sharp, I'm using an older mac book pro so no idea what the monitor is other than its better than my older computer and not as great as a new mac or PC calibrated one.

I didn't want to bump up the ISO or shutter speed because the day was so dark it looked grainy and gritty and from 200+ ft away; I was in a better position to pan everything

I think this lens backfocuses slight but I can always exchange that/adjust it on the camera, I use a 7D.

Thank you again and I'm always open for more suggestions on how to make it better next time. But seriously, is this lens soft?

Hope you like the cat.
