Default MIA

I have never been able to capture the vastness of this place. I compiled a panoramic (not posted) and it's still dull. What am I missing?

I decided to get a close up of the river and tracks. While PP I noticed the better shot would have been to include the highway just out of frame to the right. Reference the above picture for details. Yep an obvious one. I did have a 300mm lens with me but my photographic adventure turned into are you finished yet.

I think what you're looking for will be difficult to convey. The uniformity of color and lack of reference in the landscape doesn't lend itself to what you have in mind.

This is mid day. Do you think the warm light of evening could lend a hand? I'm not sure where the sun sets here. I know in fall it is absolutely gorgeous but that's a few months away. There is a kayak in one of the pictures but he translates as a red dot basically.

The first picture doesn't appear to have a focal point and is out of focus. You might want to look into stitching if w/o a wide angle lens?

I can't get a feel for what you're trying to do from those shots

I'm pretty sure the center was the focus point. I can't remember if I had it set to auto select or manual. (as far as the dots through the viewfinder) I had my camera on my tripod but could have incorporated minor shake. I also had a circular polarizer and uv filter on.

I did a stitching but didn't post it. It is basically just as bland. Rolling trees and sky. I'm on an overlook and to my left were people in the shot, son crying, wife complaining, blah blah. So I called it quits before I got the full pan. I had planned to get close to a 180 degree shot and then lower the tripod and take the same shots to capture the road, river and tracks. It's beautiful to look at with the naked eye but I can't seem to capture it. It's vast for sure but again I can't get it to translate.

The location is the Breaks Interstate Park along the VA and KY border. Basically that mountain range is the border. There is major construction to the right of the picture which includes building the tallest bridge in VA but it's nothing to look at yet. The parks nickname is the Grand Canyon of the south.
