Sure, look at the "Sound-activated Paint" link in my sig. Basically a subwoofer (leftover from an old computer surround system) covered with plastic, paint on the plastic, sound pumped in. Flash either from the side (with black background) or from the front (white background), varying flash power and ISO to get the right brightness. Aperture is preference, I've shot f/10 and I've shot f/2.8, playing with aperture gives you different effects.
