Default Guess who is using a grey card...

curiosity is lol... JPL just said we have a target on the rover that the camera uses to calibrate its color. In photography that means a grey card =)

Yeah, all of the Mars rovers have had a target, otherwise they couldn't be sure what they were looking at.

Was listening to a radio science program the other day and they were talking about it. Sounds like it has colors on it as well so as to help making color images more accurate and to help with identifying the geology as well. They said these images will be the most color accurate to date of the red planet. They incorporated it into a sundial that they can keep accurate color even in shadow.

Makes sense to me... low-tech devices can serve as a good point of reference in circumstances where we have no other point of reference.
We don't know the color balance of Mars, so we need a reference of colors we do know of, and likewise time on Mars is completely different, so the time reference needs to be managed too, using analog methods (until someone finally decides which time base to use for Mars time).

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera. - someone
