Max height of GIFs

Is there a reason why GIF attachments are limited to 280 high?

I would normally choose GIF to post screenshots (of programs, not images) but the limited height effectively prevents this.

I've not dabbled in GIF's except for the avatar. I usually use JPG's.
So I guess I can't answer your question, but only offer an alternative.
