Default NH to FL roadtrip - anything to see?

So I'm driving from New Hampshire to Florida tomorrow and over the next week or so. I'm actually not really doing much between NH and Gettysburg, PA (other than Ansel in Boston), but after that I want it to be more scenic. Any suggestions on things to see in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, or Florida?

I'll be living in Florida at least through March, maybe longer though. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Regards!

Not too much as far as scenic here in MD considering you'll be coming down I-95 right through the middle. To the West you would have the Appalachain Mountains, and to the East the Chesapeake bay and the Eastern Shore has some nice photo op's. You could make a side-trip to DC. You'll be on the DC beltway (495) anyway so about 15-20 mins to drive in and park near the Smithsonian. Maybe an hour or so walking the mall and taking pics of the monuments. Would be a nice little 2 hr side-trip. Even better if you decided to make it your half way point for the trip and spend the night nearby

Just a though.

If you happen to pass through Chattanooga, Tennessee, let me know. I'll give you the 25 cent tour. It is quite a scenic city, though it is much more picturesque in the warmer months. Maybe a better choice for the ride back north. You can cut over to I-75 and get a ride through some very scenic parts of the Appalachian mountains.

What part of Florida are you going to?

I guess if you aren't in a hurry you could cut through PA to get to Skyline drive. That's a very scenic road that runs along the peaks of the Appalachain Mts..Stop by Lurray (sp?) Caverns.

Ok - I'm in Gettysburg, this is where I'll spend a couple of days. Next it's southward bound and off to see state capitols in VA, MD, NC, SC, GA, and FL.

I might swing by DC, but we'll see if I have time and feel like it. What's to do for New Year's around here

Annapolis has a great new years party, First Night Annapolis. I think you need to buy tickets in advance though. Lots of cool food, outdoor entertainment, live bands. Fun times. Lots of photo ops with the city being on the water and it being a historical city. Lots of tiny stores on cobblestone roads if thats your thing. The state capital building is pretty prominent as well on top of the hill.

From Gettysburg, two of your choices South are US 15 or I-83.

I don't know much about that part of US 15 except it has a bad reputation for accident fatalities. It crosses I-70 near Frederick. It is much more rural that way, and the scenery might be better - but then you have a good hike East on I-70 to Baltimore, then South to Annapolis.

If you go East from Gettysburg a couple miles and South on I-83 you go right into Baltimore. You go through York, PA and if Harleys interest you the factory is about a mile from I-83. I think they have a tour. The trip down I-83 is somewhat rural, but nothing remarkable.

Baltimore has the Inner Harbor and a bunch of attractions if you're interested. See the thread in this board about the Maryland POTN meet for some quick suggestions.

Annapolis has some interesting sights for an old Colonial-era town. The Naval Academy can be worth some time.

Best I can do off the top of my head - hope it helps.

Have Fun,

As Wrench mentioned, Annapolis has a well-known celebration, but I've never been to it.

Baltimore has a big bash at the Inner Harbor with fireworks. Its usually crowded, though, and that has kept me away.

I've been spending the last several New Year's Eves in Ocean City, MD. A nice getaway, but not worth the trip just for the NYE celebration.

Have Fun,

Is the Annapolis NYE celebration better than anything in DC? (is there anything in DC anyway?)

No personal knowledge, here's what the AOL Cityguide has to say:

http://cityguide.aol.com/washington/...earsevents2005

All I know about the Annapolis NYE is that it generally gets good press in Baltimore - but the Baltimore media might just be trying to keep folks away from DC (a little rivalry going on there).

Have Fun,

You can also go west from Gettysburg and take I-81 to Front Royal, then the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway (weather permitting) with side trips in VA to Luray Caverns, Monticello, Ashlawn (Monroe's home) Charlottesville, Roanoke (O. Winston Link Museum - photographer of steam railways, and the VA Museum of Transportation) fo starters. Then I-77 south through Charlotte & Columbia SC.

Nope, nothin' to see. You have to get west of the Mississippi to have anything to see.
