Default Death comes for the Almond Blossom

First time poster in this forum.

Late last week, some extension tubes arrived for me to try out.

I don't know if I'm using them right (aperture, shutter speed, etc) but I've had a lot of fun looking at stuff that would have otherwise escaped notice.

Here's one from today. As the post title says, it's an Almond blossom past its time. It was photographed against an overcast sky. It looked a little washed out. The frame is my feeble attempt to distract from that fact.

thanks for looking

I agree. It looks like the dead flower is jumping out of the fram to me.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.
What a mistake it's been to overlook this wonderful forum.

I've just seen Melvyn's lizard, caterpillers, etc.
I've just seen Lord's spores (...apologies, you mentioned its more formal name and I've forgotten)
I've also seen Athena's photos.
AWESOME one and all.

As I said, I'm new at this but it's been a rewarding--however, short-- experience.

Here's another to share just because I liked how the mature leaves made for a good background for the new sprouts

Hi there,

The picture of the almond is a very good subject for OOB. See the competitions forum and you'll see what I mean.

It looks great as it is and will be even lovely if you use OOB.

Regards

Nice shots Steve! You'll see some truly excellent work here from these guys, and you learn lots as well! I'm glad I started checking them out, it's rekindled my enjoyment of photography I think (as well as going digital).

Great. Just what I need...another round of lens buying.
It's probably in a Sticky somewhere but since you mentioned it here I'll ask: How are Macro lenses and extension tubes different in terms of the output?

They are Kenko extension tubes. For the first shot, I was using a 135mm f/2.0L lens and for the second, a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L

Leo: Thanks. Your words are encouraging.
I know what you mean about the shallow DOF. There's a fine line between "Wow-Cool-Effect" and "Why-did-you-bother?". That's why I questioned my judgement with the first shot.

Regards

Both are very nice, but the first one is the winner for me. I usually like more DOF, but the shallow DOF really works here in the 1st image. Great work, and keep them coming!

I am new to macro too Steve, so thank you very much for your compliment.

I like the colors in #2 very much. Send more samples. BTW, what tubes are you using and on what lens?
