Default Min aperature on 70-200mm lenses

Does anyone know what the minimum aperatures are for the Canon F4 70-200mm and the Canon f2.8 70-200mm? Sigma states theirs as being f22 on the 70-200mm f2.8 and I was wondering how that compared to the Canon.
Thanks,
Reed

I would say, without a doubt in my mind, that it's f/22 for the 2.8 and f/32 for the f/4. That's usually how it goes. Most lenses 2.8 and faster can only go to f/22, exluding maybe the 85 1.2L, which will only go to f/16. Slower, and it's usually f/32.

Well so much for testimonials such as "I try not to say things that I don't know to be true. Otherwise, you may end up looking like quite the fool. Don't you agree?"

Enjoy! Lon

You need to seriously watch your behavior and stop badgering me. I don't say things I don't think are true. What I said about the ap on the 70-200 lenses holds true with my shorter lenses and zooms. Therefore, I figured it was the same on the longer lenses as well. Let's not bring this as far as to involve moderators. You're being rude.

According to Canon's website they're both f32

Peatoire,
My hat goes off to you. Where'd you find it? I checked the places I thought that it would be found, but didn't see anything.
Thanks folks,
Reed

IS is definately 32... though i would never use it at 32... it's a freaking zoom, you want sharp but shallow dof and high speeds, not slow and everything in acceptable focus

in a zoom, you really don't need to look at min, just max. unless you do a lot of landscapes with a 70mm...

There are all sorts of photographic circumstances with a wide aperture zoom, other than landscapes, where one would be very interested in a grand depth of field, even at the expense of the inevitable small aperture induced diffraction.

These circumstances may not be important to you, but I suspect that they are to some, possibly most, photographers.

So, I think the smallest aperture available is a very significant lens attribute, regardless of the type of lens.

Enjoy! Lon

I've used mine at f/32, but only while taking a photography class and our assignment involved capturing blur. Worked great, got a real long shutter speed and nice blur. Much more often go the other way to try and stop action, but always try to keep the mind open to creative opportunities.

A very good point.

Smaller apertures allow slower shutter speeds, and often slower shutter speeds are just the ticket. Again, the slower shutter speed might be desirable, even at the expense of the small aperture induced diffraction.

But, a bigger point; ones own photographic style or methodologies are just that. They are never indicative of how others may utilize the same tools for their individual needs.

The more F-stops I have available, the more possibilities I have.

Enjoy! Lon
