My first shots at archery, not too happy with the pictures, as it was impossible to get facial images, as photographers are made to stand 10 feet behind the archers. The other problem is that the archers are standing soo close to each other, you just cant get clear images.

It actually looks like you need to stop down a little bit. The scope on the bow (at least that's what it looks like) is is focus, but her face and body are a bit soft. Also, she's backlit and will lack some detail without a fill flash.

The bows have got soo hi tech. I believe they are all the counter balances. To be honest this is the first time i got a chance to see archery in a competition. 10 feet behind is no good for getting a good photo

The thing in the lower right is a telescope/monocular on a tripod so she can see where her arrows hit.

It's not a bad shot, all things considered. It looks like the camera focused on the telescope. Select a single focus point, try to focus on the archer's face, and possibly stop down a bit as mentioned.

I had no restrictions on roaming. You're right, though, there is no way to get frontal shots. But it was a large open area and I had a 2x extender on my 70-200. On the 5D that's 400mm, but on the 10D it's 640mm. So I could move a bit forward out on the sides of the range and still get some decent shots from about 30 degrees to the front. Next time I might rent a wireless remote and set the camera on a tripod further down the side of the range (hoping for no stray arrows). If the officials allowed it, I'll guess you could rig up a plexiglass shield or something and actually place the camera in the target area. |

where did you shoot that last guy using the mouth tab? ive heard of a couple guys doing that in national tournaments out west, but never seen anytyhing around here like that. oh and they needs the spotting scope (the big thing in the first pic) to see where arrows land downrange, at the max distance in a fita shoot its 90 meters away, and the arrows are tiny as possible for fita shoots, less side to side windage flaws
