Default 580EX Battery Door Question

I just received my 580EX yesterday. The door to the battery compartment seems difficult to open. It's like it's in a bind or something. I felt like I was going to break it trying to get it open. After messing with it a little bit, it seems like there is a trick to opening it, but it still seems more difficult than it should be. Are they all like this or is something wrong with mine?

Thanks!

This is normal and it's the first thing everyone thinks. No need to worry about it.

Think of it as a 'feature'
The batteries are less prone to fall out this way.

Strange; Mine can be held battery door down, and when I 'unlock' it, the battery door 'sticks' when about 5 mm open, so the batteries stay in. I like it.

The battery compartment door is smooth as butta, but it does the same thing as everybody else's.

Nicely put - I think they refer to that in the software world as an "undocumented feature."

I have 2 of the 580's and they're both like that. Terrified me the first time I ever changed the batteries. I VERY CAREFULLY dabbed a little bit of silicon onto the hinge area which helped slightly. - Stu

It's the same with everyone's I'm pretty sure. It's just the silly design.

Either way, it works, may be not as smoothly as it should, but it works. No alternatives so it doesn't matter anyway.

Don't get too heavy handed with it though, if you happen to pull it off it's "back to the ranch" at Canon to be fixed.

I read about his alot before I bought the 580EX. I think it works fine but it does have definite sequence of operation.

Open: Slide then lift
Close: Shut then slide

It doesn't really seem that hard to me and I personally don't see a design problem.

I agree..... just exercise a little TLC and follow reefbone's sequence . And DON'T do it in haste. That's when you're liable to damage it if careless.

I had the same ussue with my 580 when I got it, the design is not a feature, but a nightmare... I hate it, hate it, hate it.......
