Boy, does that take me back....

My brother was a student at Cal Poly back in the 1950s, and we used to eat at a restaurant right across the street from there. I seem to recall it was called the "Park Hotel Cafe, or something like that.

Anyway, I'm sure it's no longer there. It was well on its way to falling down in 1956.

I checked earlier today and I couldn't find the Cafe you are talking about. Perhaps I didn't search well enough though. Beautiful city though

Actually, I checked again and I found a "Park Restraunt: Since 1916" or something like that. Could this be what you were referring to belmondo? It's right across from the tracks by the bridge.

That very well could be it!! I haven't been near there in decades, and I'd just assumed it was gone.

Not quite, although I can still remember a time when most class1 railroads were still using steam. A few railroads were using diesels, mainly in passenger service in the 1930s. The big switch started in the 40s, and was pretty much over with by the mid-50s. I can still remember seeing steam engines on the Coast Route of the Southern Pacific in 1954.

I was born during WW II, so I saw plenty of steam.
