Default POTN G-series Speed Challenge #110 - Animals that aren't pets

RESULTS!

Thanks to all who participated, ensuring enough good images to make judging a challenge. I felt this was quite a tough one, would love to have entered myself, and had lots of ideas re worms, roadkill, sardines on toast, and maybe even a hairy Homo Sapiens animal from a local bar. Yes, I might have had to accept all those under my own rules! For those who submitted the fine bird photos, I know how hard it is to get something out of the ordinary as opposed to just good ID shots.

A few comments on each in the order posted. Remember, they are only my personal opinions, which may be not worth much in YOUR opinion and that's OK.

KC Jewel: Giant Octopus. Nice one of a balloon, and I wish we had weather like that here, but it's not an animal - sorry!

touchmyichi: Tucked Duck. Nice centered composition with the ripples, but the main subject didn't really grab me as a prizewinner should.

Sara: Ick! One of those few cases where a part of the subject out of focus actually improves the shot. With the weird multiple eyes in focus and the advancing legs blurred, there is a definite impression that this nasty looking beast is in motion and advancing on the viewer. I like it but wouldn't want it hanging on my bedroom wall.

rowdyred94: A fellow hiker. It's hard to get good ones of these critters as they always seem to be well camouflaged and partly obscured by vegetation, which in this case takes up rather too much of the composition to be a winner, particularly with most of the subject out of focus.

nvidia5700: Caterpillar. Love the delicate colors, and the nibbled leaf tells a story, too. Cropping more of the out-of-focus edges, particularly the pale area at top right, would improve the image considerably but I still liked it a lot.

abat: Goanna Rock. A nice composition - I have no criticism at all!

Boutty: grass hopper. Excellent! A simple composition, everything in focus, and the beady eye and quizzically cocked head clinched this as a contender from first glance. I'd guess a light box and lots of shots to get this result?

EskoLius: GoldenEye. Common G-eye as opposed to Barrow's - right? I often have a hard time distinguishing them but this nice shot makes it easy.

alans220: Sitting Pretty. Good pelican portrait, and you've handled the high contrast well although the pilings distract a little from the composition.

Marie: butterfly suffers for spider's supper. Well composed and it tells a stomach-churning story, but I have the impression the whole image is very slightly out of focus. Some heavy duty sharpening would have improved this quite a bit, I think.

jhjl1: Ba Ba Black Sheep. Makes me wonder where it was taken and whether the sheep get much sustenance out of that arid country. Montana? Eastern Oregon? The mirror showing backed up traffic is a nice touch, as is the inclusion of the single black sheep.

MegaTrixel: From the Rainforest. Good one - beautiful butterfly with nice detail of its front end bits and pieces. Overall, though, there seems to be a bit of "grain" - maybe due to overcropping or high ISO?

rpolitsr: visit to an old trunk. Either that's a small stick or one heck of a big millipede thing. Nice shot but would have been better with the front end in focus.

AND THE WINNERS ARE...

First - Boutty
Second - Sara
Third - abat

Honourable mentions in no particular order: nvidia5700, alans220, Megatrixel and jhjl1.

Challenge #110 - Animals that aren't pets

Any animal, bug, fish, bird etc. will do as long as it is not a pet or in a zoo. No stuffed ones or museum exhibits, either, please! Domestics such as cows and sheep are OK, but no cats, dogs or goldfish, etc. This may be tougher if you live in a city, but with macro mode you could still find some great subjects if you look around.

Entries will be judged on overall photo quality, composition and creativity.

PLEASE READ THE RULES and good luck!
