Taking the "Walk of Shame"
|
Ill be going to Venice for 10 days in mid may. Ill be bringing my 40D/24-70/70-200/tripod along for the journey. Ive flown with all of these before with no problem.
I wil be purchasing the 400 f5.6 either before the trip or right when I return. The question is has anyone flown with the 400mm or larger. Ill need to either put my 70-200 in my suitcase and try and fit the 400 in m camera back or visa versa. Does anyone know the bird situation in Venice. We wont be traveling to the MT.s in Corina I dont think...yet lol. Just curious if it would be worth it? NOt to concerned about 5-10 shots I COULD have taken. It would have to be a larger ratio

IMHO; if your 10 days are all in Venice, you will probably use your 24-70 95% of the time. Along the waters edge there are some really cool oportunities for longer FL - like 70-150mm.
If you like 400mm shots of pigeons then bring the big lens, but I sure don't recall many oportunities for other wildlife in Venice. Now if you were to find a wildlife excursion into the mountains... Otherwise I'd leave the 400 at home - or purchase it after your trip. Just me thoughts...

One other thought; you might think about bringing something wider than 24mm. A lot of my shots from Italian towns are in the 15-24mm range.

Thanks jannsen, I was along those lines, im kind of a tripod 3 second exposure man anyway, and the water people and static buildings will be great for that

40d wont allow that ha, and ive already decided it would be the tokina 12-24 over the canon but Im not thinking about that lens until after the 400, mabe even after the 100 macro, im thinkin wide angle for next winter hahah. But you are right, ill just have to either zoom my legs back or miss out=/

Another strong recommendation for wide angle and UWA.
As for the Canon 10-22 Tokina 12-24 debate I say get the Canon for the following reasons: - 2mm on the wide side can really make a difference - have used both and I can say the difference in build quality isn't that great to make you chose the Tokina. - in terms of sharpness and IQ the Canon 10 22 is a hidden L just like the 100 2.8 macro.

I think if I were you I would get the UWA lens first so you could use it where youll need it first in venice...

Agreed, I'd at least rent a UWA for the trip. Probably leave the 400 home.

Unless you are planning on full frame soon get the Canon 10-22 (or the Sigma 10-20). Once you have experienced UWA you will wonder why you didn't go there before. 24 is not very wide on a crop body.
If you are planning on full frame soon, the best choices in IQ terms are the Canon 16-35 Mk II L or Canon 17-40 L. Second choice would be the Sigma 12-24 which is really wide especially on full frame.

I was in Venice last year and was very thankful for my sigma 10-20. you need to get wide to really appreciate the canals and narrow streets, imo.

I was just loking at rentals, the tokina 10-17 fisheye ZOOM is 66 for two weeks a tad bit more w/insurance, this is as wide as id need but should i stick here or could I manage with the 12-24, ive been through tons of information on this lens over the past 6 months however Im completely new to the 10-17(although sounds very interesting and fun)

I came back from Venice last year with a damaged 24-70L where someone just barged past me and I hit the ground. Beware the Italian hatred of any kind of queing, they refuse to wait patiently in line for anything. So be careful of your kit.
There are some wonderful photographs in Venice just waiting to have your name at the bottom. As already mentioned, mostly wide angle rather than tele shots, but there are enough to warrant the 70-200. Richard |
