I'm planning to buy a stand alone studio flash like the Elinchrom EL 500 to use with my G1. I'm assuming that I just need a hotshoe to PC adapter to make the strobe synch with the camera. Is this correct? Can I use any shutter speed and aperture combination in manual mode? Any advice regarding non-Canon studio style strobes would be appreciated.

For any type of studio strobes I would recommend using fuse device (like a surge protector) that will stop the free charge from traveling and ruinning (frying) your equipment. Such precautions are not neccesarry for mechanical cameras but for any type of digital equipment are highly advisable. Olympus introduced such device with their C2100 model and than Nikon followed up short after. Use it as a precaution...

Thanks. That's something I hadn't even considered. I'd hate to fry my G1.
